envision the ability to have the firmware and databases
to update transparently in the background without pilot
intervention but, of course, with pilot knowledge - and
acceptance - of the updates."
ATG Connections
Several manufacturers offer systems that connect airto-ground communication systems, but throughput
makes internet connections problematic. The
nascent 5G system offers greater throughput,
said Kauffman, but "the range of 5G's higher
frequencies will be more limiting than 4G
technology. The beam-forming technologies of 5G
will be interesting to follow relative to applicability
to aviation."
SmartSky offers a bidirectional high-speed, lowlatency ATG system that communicates via 4G LTE.
Its beam-forming technology establishes a one-on-one
connection with a cell tower. Connecting to the cabin
Wi-Fi router, passengers use their own devices to talk,
text, send emails with large file attachments, and stream

video. The system is available for business jets, and price
hinders its migration to the rest of general aviation.
From a technical standpoint, 5G could reasonably
support airborne applications, "but that's just not where
companies developing 5G are right now," Stone said.
"Their vision is that in urban areas, there would be a
5G hotspot on every corner and that it may cover half a
block. This is for the internet of things," the connection
of everything from cars to video doorbells.
Satellite Connections
Aviators today can connect with two
constellations that cover the globe, Iridium's
Certus network of 66 low-earth orbit satellites
and Inmarsat's 13 geostationary satellites.
Just now joining them is another potential
solution source. OneWeb, a global
communication company, successfully
launched its first six satellites in late
February 2019.
OneWeb's goal is to bring broadband
connectivity, with high-data throughput
with low latency, to everyone, everywhere with a
constellation of more than 650 Ka and Ku band satellites.
With the success of its initial launch, OneWeb's monthly
launch plan expects to orbit 30 satellites per rocket.
Customer demos are expected in 2020 with full global
commercial coverage in 2021.
Global ADS-B coverage is another coming capability,
thanks to the 1090ES receivers carried aloft by the new
Iridium Next satellites. This service is the result of the
Aireon partnership that includes Iridium and many of the
world's air navigation service providers such as Nav Canada.
The benefits of global surveillance, tracking and
traffic management are clear. No matter where they are,
controllers will automatically see on their scopes the
position and related data of any aircraft equipped with an
ADS-B Out 1090ES transponder.
Nav Canada's Edmonton and Gander Flight
Information Regions started receiving Aireon ADS-B
data earlier this year. After establishing itself in this
Canadian airspace, operational trials will begin in the
North Atlantic, the world's busiest oceanic airspace.
BendixKing launched the AeroWave 100, which
connects to the Iridium constellation, in 2014, as a lowcost connectivity solution for turboprops and light jets.
"Obviously, we are working on additional follow-on
products," Kauffman said. "There are many promising
technologies that will bring in-flight connectivity to Part
23 aircraft."
