fly aircraft A and will be flying aircraft B instead, brush
up on the SAFA binder or electronic document so you're
familiar with any nuances that make aircraft B different.
The inspection process itself is typically simple,
especially if you're prepared. In general, inspectors will
not hold up your departure or create other scheduling
challenges unless they believe there is a significant
safety risk.
Findings, resolution and trending
Findings are categorized by severity. A Category 1
finding is a minor finding. Category 2 is a significant
finding, and Category 3 is a major finding. An inspector
will not only consider the severity of findings but the

number of overall findings. Major findings that impact
safety may result in the inspector grounding the aircraft
until corrective actions are taken. In other cases, an
aircraft may be permitted to depart the airport but not
continue to operate in participating states. In those
scenarios, the ban is typically lifted after the operator
corrects the finding.
All inspection results are recorded in a single
database, managed and analyzed by the EASA and
the EASA publishes an aggregated report of all SAFA
inspections and findings.
In 2012, just over 11,000 SAFA inspections were
conducted by the EASA and other participating states,
covering over 440,000 individual inspection items.
Of these inspection items, only 10,805 findings were
reported. Of these, less than one-third (3,156) were
Category 3 or major findings.
