With the average age of general-aviation aircraft well
above 35 - most of them have hull values below $50,000
- it's little wonder so many aircraft owners miss out due
to affordability.
For many pilots, the cost of converting to all glass
approaches the value of their aircraft. For that matter,
money holds back some interested only in going partial
glass.
With $10,000 plus conversions, it can be tough to
justify spending that much on an aircraft with values
between $20,000 and $50,000. This isn't news to any
avionics maker, at least as evidenced by the efforts so
many companies devoted to marketing glass options that
won't break the bank.
The past several years saw numerous new glass
components come to market, VFR and IFR, aimed at the
budget-constrained aviators - which is a lot of us. We're
talking under $10,000 to go glass and, if it's relevant,
add a basic universal access transceiver to comply with
the ADS-B mandate.
Some owners may hesitate out of a desire to go all-in
on glass. But with some of these systems, it need not
be an all-or-nothing proposition. Not when they have
the option of taking a progressive-upgrade approach,
spreading the all-in outcome across two or three annuals.
Avionics shops should consider highlighting such
options to aircraft owners. Remind them that a glasscockpit conversion need not be a one-step-and-done
process with an unaffordable price.
Aspen Avionics: Evolution E5
The folks from Albuquerque, New Mexico, unveiled
their latest glass component in March 2018, and the
Evolution E5 became a quick hit.
A non-TSO'd component, the E5 replaces all six
analog instruments in the standard six-pack with an
upgradable solid-state instrument that shares its form
factor with Aspen's entire Evolution product line. It
fits into the space where the attitude indicator and
directional gyro typically reside - two openings, one
above the other.
At a price under $5,000 uninstalled, pilots often ask
what they can get for that price - and is it worth it? What
you get is everything for VFR, and more.
Aspen designed the E5 as a drop-in non-TSO
replacement for those traditional analog gyro and

vacuum instruments, instead displaying all its data on an
active matrix LCD measuring 6 inches diagonally.
That largely answers the question with a solid "yes" if
the pilot or owner covets the common benefits of glass
components.
First up, the Evolution E5 Dual Electronic Flight
Instrument combines a traditional AI, DG and CDI into
one display.
The unit also incorporates a WAAS GPS and offers
GPS roll steering when connected to a compatible
autopilot. The unit also contains an integral air-data
computer, an attitude and air-data heading reference
system, as well as a backup battery in case of loss of
electrical power.
With the ADAHRS, the E5 also displays all the
needed air data: airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, turn
coordinator and slip/skid indicator.
Aspen's E5 produces a brighter, more-vibrant display
than previous Evolution products but retains Aspen's
unique form factor to help reduce installation costs.
The engineers designed flexibility into the E5 that
allows future upgrades without totally replacing the E5.
Similar to Aspen's other products, the E5 remains
perpetually configurable and upgradable - affordably.
Aspen products all have the option to receive affordable
software updates rather than purchasing all-new avionics
hardware every few years.
