aerobatics or unusual attitudes.
Options include an outside air-temperature sensor and
a remote magnetometer.
The Experimental Aircraft Association offers a
lengthy AML STC running 21 pages and covering
hundreds of popular general-aviation aircraft. List prices
start at about $2,200.
Dynon: EFIS-D100 SuperBright
What Dynon started with the EFIS-D10A grew in size
with Dynon's EFIS-D100 SuperBright.
The second of Dynon's pioneering STC'd products,
the EFIS-D100 is a cousin of the EFIS-D10A. Dynon
offers the EFIS-D100 as the only 7-inch widescreen
PFD available for type certificated aircraft.
The EFIS-D100 product features all the same data
displays as its cousin: attitude, airspeed, altitude, turn
rate, inclinometer, g-meter, up/down timers, clock,
and voltmeter. As with the smaller model, an optional
backup battery continues to power the EFIS-D100
should the aircraft's electrical system fail. Dynon also
offers an optional AOA sensor, magnetic heading, OAT,
true airspeed, winds aloft, and density altitude.
A GPS receiver/antenna module and the standby
battery round out the equipment required to replace the
vacuum-powered AI under the EAA STC.
Like its cousin, the EFIS-D100's ADAHRS
automatically recovers from attitude changes greater
than 150 degrees per second in roll, pitch and yaw, and
it has in-flight start capability.
Garmin: G5
The G5 pioneered Garmin's dive into low-cost glass
when the company unveiled the innovative model for
experimental aircraft three years ago. Subsequently,
Garmin developed approvals for installing the G5,
singularly or as part of a pair or trio, in type-certificated
aircraft.
Designed to replace traditional electromechanical

and air-powered instruments, the G5 may be configured
for one of three functions: attitude indicator/PFD, DG/
HI/HSI or for the turn coordinator position.
The G5 installs easily as a drop-in replacement
for primary attitude and/or directional gyros in typecertificated fixed-wing aircraft. For select aircraft
equipped with G500 or G500 TXi, the G5 may serve as
a standby flight instrument to those systems.
The sunlight-readable 3.5-inch LCD color display fits
into a standard 3 1/8-inch instrument cutout and includes
a four-hour backup battery. The screen displays a
battery-status indicator to help the pilot know the
condition of this redundancy feature.
Certified via an AML STC for installation on more
than 560 aircraft makes and models means most aircraft
can incorporate a single or dual G5 installation. With
dual G5s installed, the pilot enjoys a reversionary
display capability plus the added redundancy of dual
ADAHRS and dual backup batteries.
Providing an economical upgrade path via a
comprehensive AML, the compact and cost-effective
G5 is bringing modern "glass cockpit" reference to
thousands of aircraft that would otherwise depend on
older, vacuum-driven equipment. An available GPS nav
interface gives the G5 the ability to serve as an HSI.
The DG/HSI and AI functions are the big selling points
for many pilots.
A dual-G5 installation runs about $5,000 - plus
installation.
Garmin: G3X Touch
For pilots interested in a larger display for
certificated aircraft, Garmin recently earned approval
for its popular G3X Touch PFD/MFD, originally an
experimental and light-sport product.
