Genesys already holds an extensive list of approvals
from both the Federal Aviation Administration and the
European Aviation Safety Agency covering more than
100 different types and models, with nearly a dozen more
approvals in the works.
And the 3100 joins the company's other digital flightcontrol system, the S-TEC 5000, designed for jets and
turboprops - with a list of features largely shared by the
3100. The company also continues to make its broad
line of analog automatic flight control systems, from the
rate-based S-TEC System 20, System 30 and 30 ALT to
its attitude-based models, including System 60-2, System
65 and System 55X.
Besides offering the 3100 as a stand-alone addition
to an aircraft's panel, Genesys also offers the 3100
packaged to upgrade an owner's existing aircraft.
Among the appealing aspects of the 3100 is its ability
to work with older servos - and to run them from full
deflection and back as part of the system's initiation
and self-test functions. The pilot can watch the 3100 go
through its self-test and initialization process and track
the 3100's progress via the screen display.
Genesys made the 3100 in the same form factor as its
original digital flight-control system, the S-TEC 5000
- which is the same form factor common to half-height
avionics. The control unit measures 6.25 inches wide,
1.45 inches high and 9 inches deep, small enough to fit
in a panel opening of most light general-aviation aircraft.
The S-TEC 3100: A feature-rich system
Thanks to Genesys, this contributing editor for
Avionics News met Simpson Bennett, the marketing
communications manager for the company, along with
Genesys pilot Chad Howard at Lloyd Stearman Field

about 15 miles northeast of Wichita, Kansas. The task:
sample the features and control of the S-TEC 3100 in
one of Genesys' test-bed aircraft, a Cessna 182.
The Skylane's panel incorporated an Avidyne IFD540,
an L3 ESI-500 electronic standby instrument system,
and an Aspen Evolution 1000 primary flight display, all
working with the 3100.
Genesys engineers designed the S-TEC 3100 with the
capability to work as either a two- or three-axis attitudebased digital flight control system. The panel-mounted
box houses a computer/programmer, which performs
input/output processing and control laws. The 3100 box
also integrates its bezel/display for mode selection and
display, including trim annunciations.
Thanks to its integral ADAHRS sensor set, the 3100
senses roll attitude, roll rate, heading error, and course
deviation to control the roll servo. The autopilot also
senses pitch attitude, pitch rate, pressure altitude,
indicated airspeed, vertical speed, vertical acceleration,
and glideslope deviation to control the pitch servo. Add
the 3100's optional yaw control, and the autopilot senses
yaw rate and acceleration to control the yaw servo.
The 3100 senses any out-of-trim conditions whenever
the trim sensor in the pitch servo is activated. In response
to this, the 3100 drives the trim servo in the proper
direction until it restores a trimmed condition. The 3100
also includes an altitude preselect function, if enabled, to
capture altitude in climbs or descents.
Howard provided a brief tour of the 3100's features
and controls and how they appear on the flight-control
systems central brain mounted in the panel. The modes
available are extensive, useful and easily activated.
Among the principal modes of operation of the roll
servo are:
*	 Autopilot mode: engages roll servo.
*	 Flight director mode: laterally drives steering
command bars.
*	 Roll attitude mode: holds roll attitude.
*	 Heading mode: turns onto a selected heading and
holds it.
*	 Navigation mode: intercepts and tracks a VOR
course.
