Writing with Style
W

hen you write with style, it doesn't necessarily
mean you're a good writer. Rather, when it comes
to writing, style means having a consistent system
for how you use and spell words.
For example, you might see both airshow (one word) and
air show (two words). In the aviation industry, both seem to be
acceptable. However, choose one spelling and use it all the time
for every written piece you produce - whether it's copy written
for trade show signage or your website - and make sure you are
consistent.
Here are a few suggestions on how to improve your
writing style.
Use a stylebook. Media organizations often use stylebooks as a guideline for their writers. The most popular, and the
one used by Avionics News, is the AP Stylebook. You may purchase a physical copy of the book, but another alternative is to

have an online subscription from apstylebook.com, as updates
are made continuously throughout the year. For one user, the
annual subscription fee is $26, which is a good investment to
improve the quality of your marketing materials.
Start with your company name. Be consistent when writing your company name, whether you use
"Company" at the end of your business name or "Co." Some
businesses spell out "Incorporated" while others abbreviate
it "Inc." Some organizations have a rule that the company
name can't be hyphenated at the end of a line or even broken up at the end of the line. This means if your company is
Jones Avionics, those two words must always stay together;
you can't have Jones at the end of one line and Avionics at
the beginning of the next. That may be a rule for purists, but
for us regular people, simply have one company name and
style and stick with it.
