In a resistive circuit, voltage, current and power will also take the form
of a sign wave, in perfect synchronization with the voltage.
The subject of inductors and capacitors brings back the article recently
published in Avionics News titled "Eli the Ice Man." Starting with an
inductive circuit (L), voltage leads current, or E leads I. In an AC circuit,
with a load made of pure inductance, the voltage will lead the current by
90 degrees. This means that current doesn't begin to flow until the voltage
has reached 90 degrees, or peak. By the time the current reaches peak, the
voltage is already crossing the zero volt line. When the voltage reaches its
negative peak, the current is at the zero amp line.
In a purely capacitive circuit, the opposite is true. Current leads voltage
by 90 degrees. This means the voltage will not start to rise until the current
reaches 90 degrees, or peak. By the time voltage reaches peak, the current
is crossing the zero amp line. When the current is at its negative peak, the
voltage is crossing the zero volt line.

Alternating current allows engineers to use transformers. Transformers
can step the voltage up or step it down. The voltage used on high-tension
transmission lines on those high towers running across the country can be as
high as 765 kV. The power company uses transformers to step the voltage
down to 120 V for your household technology. Transformers, capacitors and
inductors are deep enough subjects to deserve their own stories.
A good way to wind this up is with a discussion on the use of 400
Hz in aircraft, as opposed to 50 or 60 Hz. As frequency increases, the
efficiency of converting mechanical rotation to power increases. Aircraft
engineers can use the higher efficiency available at 400 Hz to design lighter
generators. In addition, when compared to a 60 Hz system, a 400 Hz
system reacts more to inductance. This higher reactance allows engineers
to design lighter transformers and use smaller wires to carry the current.
For community use, the increased reactance at the higher 400 Hz frequency
makes it difficult to send over long distances. As a result, we will be using
60 Hz at home for a long time. q
