Aircraft Spruce is ready to meet your needs for avionics harness fabrication

he Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. got its
start in the mid-1960s. Already familiar with
the aircraft parts business, company founders
Robert and Flo Irwin started selling aircraft-grade spruce
lumber to homebuilders, then added other products.
Today, the company offers a broad range of items in its
annual printed catalog, through its online presence
and from its two facilities in the U.S.,
plus the one in Canada.
Aircraft Spruce remains
a "go-to" source where
homebuilders can buy
the plans, raw materials,
finished components and,
of course, avionics, to construct
their dream machine. Those just trying to
keep their certified aircraft in the air also will find FAAapproved parts and assemblies, including avionics. And
Spruce also offers a wide array of accessories and pilot
supplies.
Given the company's roots in homebuilding, it
probably shouldn't come as a surprise to learn it also
started building avionics wiring harnesses for that
market, thanks to long-term, steady demand from those
same homebuilders. But its harness-fabrication business
truly came out of a sense of self-preservation, according

to Ryan Deck, Aircraft Spruce's avionics sales manager.
"We'd sell you an avionics unit, we'd sell you wire,
we'd sell you connectors and so forth, and you, the
homebuilder, would put it together," Deck related.
"Unfortunately, I just got tired of that phone call where the
guy calls me and says, 'Magic smoke just came out of the
box!' and he wants to know how to put it back in."
After a while he came to realize,
"If I could just give them a
little bit more convenience
and a service to put that
together for them, they'd
be not only more grateful,
but it would also cut down
on our support, and the whole
goal is making that customer-service
experience the best possible, to the end," Deck said.
"Just because you deliver on a product doesn't mean
you're done."
Spruce started making harnesses in 2015 and right
now ships out over 2,500 of them a year. Its fabrication
operation now is in a brand-new 3,000-square-foot shop at
the company's West Coast facility in Corona, California,
built last year to accommodate the people and equipment
necessary to modernize and standardize production, like a
machine to laser-mark individual wires.
