AeroLEDs received TSO and PMA certification in 2013,
allowing the company to design and manufacture all of its
lights in-house in Boise, Idaho. Nearly 80% of the parts are
manufactured within 20 miles of the company's facility.
"When we say we're American made, we truly mean it,"
Calvin said. "Manufacturing in-house gives us ultimate control
over the quality as well as the flexibility to add features and
functions for military and special use categories, which is a
substantial part of our business."
The LED advantages
LEDs offer distinct advantages over legacy lighting,
according to Calvin, a longtime pilot. LEDs are more reliable,
consume less power and perform better.
"With LEDs, you will simply get more light per given watt
of power consumed, which allows us to produce a larger area of
illumination," said Calvin, a mechanical engineer. "That enables
enhanced peripheral vision for the pilot. The color spectrum
of light is closer to indirect sunlight, rather than the typical

red-yellow produced by incandescent bulbs. You can actually
see green grass and blue colors when the light illuminates
the taxiway and runway where incandescent lights produce a
monochromatic rendering. With LEDs, you're actually seeing
full color spectrum, which gives you better depth perception."
AeroLEDs' high-performing LEDs also improve aircraft
visibility, increasing safety during terminal and en route
phases of flight.
"Unlike incandescent lighting, which tends to blend into
the background of daylights and have soft transitions of the
ON-OFF cycles, LEDs provide sharp transitions during the
ON-OFF cycle, and aren't washed out by bright sunlight,"
Calvin said. "The result is a flash or pulse that is more
recognizable in broad daylight.
"Historically, you had to buy a separate box to pulse your
light. From inception, we've designed our first LED landing
lights with the integrated pulse feature. Even in broad daylight,
