knowing if the portable intercom can interface with a
movie player - or a simple music source.
Selecting an audio-control panel:
Start with a radio count
As noted previously, the pilot flying behind a panel
with only one or two audio sources may decide to
eschew entirely an audio-control panel, or audio panel.
Admittedly, the need is minimal here.
But these days, that pilot flying even a simple panel
with only a couple of audio sources may still find value in
something more sophisticated in the way of an audio panel.
Why?
Peripherals, of course.
The pilot may enjoy streaming music of a digital music
player, and opting for an audio panel with that capability
makes it a snap to feed music or other audio to stereo
aviation headsets.
The pilot may need to make cellphone calls, to
clearance delivery, a tower, flight service or the people
waiting on him at the destination airport.
The ability to interface a phone with the aircraft audio
improves the phone experience for folks on both ends of
the call - particularly when running the aircraft engine.
By routing the call's audio into the aviation headset, the
callers can benefit from active noise reduction in the
headset or audio panel.
From there, other options come into play, with some
offering an option for the marker-beacon receiver, some a
clearance recorder, and others both.
Prospects should be helped to weigh whether other
options meet their needs. For example, pilots with a
family may desire an intercom that lets the children fend
for themselves.
And it shouldn't need saying that if the audio panel
accommodates an integral intercom, that system should be
capable of handling everyone in the cabin. So a six-place
plane should have an audio panel with, at minimum, a
six-place intercom.
What other functions are warranted will vary from
client to client, aircraft to aircraft.
A couple of words of insight on the way to selecting
either or both systems.
First, adding or upgrading either type of system offers
an excellent opportunity to check on the health and
well-being of the wiring behind the panel. Check its age,
the insulation and connections, and consider using this
opportunity to upgrade the wiring.
Second, if an existing intercom will be upgraded,
consider two points: If a monaural intercom is being

upgraded to stereo, that means upgrading the wiring
and headset jacks to three-conductor types; and
consider making the connecting wiring shielded wire
to reduce the wiring's susceptibility to electronic
interference.
Finally, be sure to help the client understand
that audio recorders and music inputs may require
additional work, wiring or jacks, depending on the
model.

Lest you might be confused by the above subhead, it
means it seems almost everyone in avionics makes one or
both of our subject systems - audio panels and intercoms.
So let's dive into a brief inventory of providers of audio
panels and intercoms.

Avidyne AMX240
