CFIT avoidance work nears completion

he General Aviation Joint Steering Committee,
a public-private partnership with the goal of
improving general aviation safety, is nearing
the end of its current work to mitigate the risk of
controlled flight into terrain accidents.
The GAJSC is a data-driven organization, using
general aviation accident data to determine the risks
associated with different types of accidents. Based on
the GAJSC dataset, loss of control in-flight, CFIT, and
system component failure-powerplant were determined
to be the three most-common GA accident types.
The GAJSC committed its resources first to loss
of control, which included two working groups, then
focused on the third highest ranking cause of GA
accidents - system component failure-powerplant. At

the time, CFIT accidents had been declining, in part due
to the increasing availability and decreasing costs of
installed equipment and electronic flight bags.
"CFIT-related accident rates dramatically decreased
with technology, but with the rate having somewhat
stabilized, the GAJSC decided to revisit the issue with
a dedicated working group," said Lauren Haertlein,
general counsel and director of safety and regulatory
affairs at the General Aviation Manufacturers
Association. "Utilizing the GAJSC's well-defined data
analysis process, the working group assessed a subset of
CFIT accidents, assigned standard problem statements,
and developed intervention strategies, ultimately leading
to the creation of detailed safety recommendations
called safety enhancements."
