ndy Osantowske grew up outside Detroit in
a blue-collar family with a father who was
a general aviation pilot. Along with a radio
scanner, Osantowske, his dad, and sister
would park the car by Oakland-Pontiac Airport (now
Oakland County International Airport), near where they
lived in Michigan, and listen to and watch the airplanes
take off and land.
"Dad was a pilot with an intense passion for aviation,
and it rubbed off on me," he said.
In fact, after his father's long career with Ford Motor
Co., his parents have plans to retire to a residential
airpark near Flint.
After graduating from high school, Osantowske
had what he describes as a "short, unsuccessful stint
in college." He knew he had to get his life on track,
"straighten myself out," as he said. He still maintained
a "childlike obsession" with airplanes, so he joined
the U.S. Air Force and worked as a mechanic, first on
the F-16 at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in
Michigan for four years, followed by work on the C-130
for two years in Nashville, Tennessee. "I was a crew
chief, which means I knew a little about a lot of things.
If the work was beyond my capabilities, I could call

in a specialist whether it was for engines, avionics or
anything else."
Prior to his time in Nashville, two important events
occurred. "I met a girl," Osantowske said. "And Katie
later became my wife." He also returned to college
at Western Kentucky University with a plan to study
law or law enforcement. Simultaneous to his return to
school, Osantowske heard a report on television that
it was the 25th anniversary of the PATCO air traffic
control strike and how there was a looming shortage of
air traffic controllers. "There was a school 100 miles
down the road - Middle Tennessee State University
- that offered an air traffic control curriculum, and I
remember sitting in my kitchen and telling my wife that
I wasn't enjoying what I was studying and wanted to
change. She simply said, 'Go for it,' and I did."
Osantowske's intensity about this aviation program
extended to moving on campus in a dorm and only
seeing his wife on weekends. This school change also
led to his transfer to the Tennessee Air National Guard.
This time, Osantowske had the maturity and drive
to take advantage of college. He graduated with a
Bachelor of Science in aerospace and was hired by
Lockheed Martin. He learned about the job in the
