Spoofing:
The tougher problem
Jamming is relatively easy.
Jamming a GPS signal requires little
in the way of equipment or technical
sophistication, both reports noted. A
relatively weak jamming transmitter can
disrupt the receiver's ability to "hear"
the satellites' signal, the ones arriving
from 22,000 miles out in space. The
weakest jamming can disrupt a navigator
for several miles when the receiver is
close to the jamming transmitter; as the
jamming signals gets stronger the radius
of the disruption grows.
Spoofing, however, requires more
sophistication and expertise. The spoof
broadcasts a signal with coding to make
the receiver think it's somewhere it's
not - that is, an actual position, albeit an
inaccurate one.
The spoofing signal must be strong
enough to drown out the satellites'
signals and, thus, needs to be closer to
the navigator to have the desired effect.
The danger of spoofing is in fooling
the navigator into thinking it's someplace
different than its actual location - and
the risks of the spoofed position, such as
terrain, obstacles or aircraft.
The spoofing signal must adhere to
the code broadcast by legitimate GPS
satellites and be of sufficient data depth
to trick - or spoof - the navigator into
showing a position different than in
reality.
While not a solution, a strong
spoofing signal will get noticed by the
multiple people who observe the change
in nav information.
This all raises questions about backup
systems for GPS. That's more weak
news.
eLORAN, which is not susceptible
to these problems, is years out in the
future but, in conjunction with multiconstellation GNSS, could provide a
safeguard against jamming and some
spoofing.
