"It's scary right now," said Tony
Polemarkis of Avionics Place. "I'm turning
down at least one install a day. We try to
get people in for installs and IFR certs, but
for installs, we're booking into April 2020
(as of June 2019). At Oshkosh we depend
on getting a month or two of work, if not
more. Two years ago, we booked more than
six month's work. Last year, we booked
three or four months. This year, we'll be
booking into summer 2020, almost a year.
It's scary."
ADS-B is just an aspect of the shop's
install work, but it is a motivator for aircraft
owners to satisfy their avionics wish list at
the same time. "ADS-B will eventually slow
down, but autopilots and nav/comms are
getting old and unrepairable. If you get a
repairable KX 155 that needs a new display,
the minimum is $1,600. The new products
coming out - autopilots - will keep us busy."
Being busy is good, "but we want to
take care of people," he said. "We're a
small shop, and we'd love to get a new
hangar and put more people on, but it is a
Catch-22, and we're having trouble finding
people. This is what I've wanted since I was
30, but I'm not 30 anymore." Polemarkis,
now 70, added that while he doesn't plan
to retire in a traditional sense, he expects
to throttle back some. "We'll see how that
goes." q

When 2019 was about a month old, Avionics
Place replaced the Cessna's BendixKing KT 76
transponder and encoder with an Appareo Stratus
ESG panel-mounted transponder with a built-in
GPS WAAS position source and its antenna. They
connected it to a new encoder and ADS-B compliant
blade antenna.
Polemarkis said he didn't remember any problems
with the install. "Sometimes it's a challenge to find
space for a remote mount because those airplanes
are often pretty backed up," he said. (And so is the
shop's schedule - see sidebar.)
With Appareo's 2F kit, Polemarkis mounted
Edmonstone's portable In-and-Out Stratus ADS-B
unit behind the 182's glove box. It works off aircraft
power and the transponder's antenna. The external
antenna vastly improves ADS-B's traffic information
capability because, in addition to seeing other ADS-B
equipped aircraft, it is pinging the ground stations.
This capability is why Edmonstone chose the
Appareo Stratus ESG.
"My little putt-putt doesn't have a glass cockpit,
no fancy avionics, and I don't plan on getting any,"
he said. "I don't fly a lot of IFR, and neither does my
friend, a retired air traffic controller, who also flies
the plane. I already had the (portable) Stratus from
Sporty's, and when Tony internalized it behind the
glove box, it comes on with the avionics switch, so it
is transparent to me now."
Edmonstone displays ADS-B In's traffic information
services and flight information services on an Apple
iPad Air running ForeFlight. With this part of the
system already an established part of his flying, "it
seemed to make sense to keep it all one package." If
he flew professionally, he might "have gone another
way, but I fly some for business, but not a lot."
Calling the partnership between the Stratus and
ForeFlight a "good team, what I like most about
ForeFlight is that it puts the weather, the airplane and
everything right on the chart." But while climbing
the ForeFlight learning curve "you need two people
in the airplane," one to pay attention to flying while
the other is paying attention to the screen.
A mount holds the iPad between the seats, just below
the throttle, so it is clearly visible from the pilot and
co-pilot seats. The mount is held by a box his mechanic
