course numbers rise. Few 300 level or 400 level courses are
transferable.
Any college will have a curriculum plan for incoming
students. Colleges also have advisers to assist students with
scheduling. Students must take their advisor's advice and
follow the plan. Take it from this professor: We don't want you
in school indefinitely. We want you in, out, and successfully
employed as quickly as possible.
Depending on the school you attend and the qualifications
you desire, you can spend anywhere from 18 months to four
years earning an undergraduate degree or certificate. During
this time, you'll be spending incredible amounts of money.
If you are attending on loans, you'll need to pay them back
with interest. Whichever postsecondary school you choose,
make the most of your time there. Work hard. If internships
are available, take advantage of them. If you can take tests to
pick up certifications, do so. I know it is possible for a student
to graduate with ASTM's National Center for Aerospace and

Transportation Technologies Aircraft Electronics Technician
certification and endorsements, an A&P, and several training
certificates from the AEA. All of those certificates and
endorsements will have a positive impact on your starting
salary.
For one final example, take into consideration Stella and
Mark's classmate, Al Ways, who volunteered for everything.
Al came to school prepared and didn't need any remediation.
He transferred in a few courses and saved some money. His
habit was to always stay after school, volunteer his time by
helping other students, participate in student organizations,
and help with repair work on college aircraft. Along with his
degree, he earned an AET certificate, A&P, and five AEA
certificates. Upon graduation, Al won an award for his hard
work and volunteer efforts. He was offered a scholarship at
a graduate school, but instead, he accepted a job at a top-tier
company at a yearly salary of $60,000.
Plan well before college, apply for scholarships, even if
you're afraid you won't qualify. Plan ahead, and once at
school, work hard, and graduate on time. The payoff lasts a
lifetime. q
