Avionics News: What is the typical yearly salary of
one of your graduates?
Fortier: Most of our aviation program graduates are
starting in the $60,000 to $80,000 salary range. That's
extremely impressive.

Fortier: Our goal has always been for our
students to be prepared to be more than maintenance
technicians. That's why we have a strong electrical
emphasis across the board for our A&P students. We
drill down on critical thinking and troubleshooting
skills.
Our new unmanned aircraft systems program
celebrated its first graduating class this past May. One
of the UAS degrees that is offered is a UAS electrical
engineering technology degree option that gives the
students a solid foundation from which they can enter
the fast-growing UAS industry.

Avionics News: Where are your graduating students
being placed? Are many taking jobs outside of aviation?
Fortier: Again, we are extremely proud that our
aviation program graduates are highly sought and are
finding their place at employers like Collins Aerospace,
Garmin and Textron Aviation. We generally do not see
them taking jobs outside of aviation because there are so
many excellent job opportunities in the aviation industry.
They are able to find good positions quickly.

Avionics News: How are you doing things
differently to keep up with technological advancements?
What's new and exciting in your curriculum?
Fortier: We have implemented a UAS electrical
engineering technology degree program to give students a
path into a growing and cutting-edge industry. While we
still focus on the basics, we have implemented integrated
avionics systems into the standard avionics training class.
Avionics News: How is your program set up? Part
147 with avionics, stand-alone avionics, degree program,
certificate program?
Fortier: All students in this degree program earn a
Bachelor of Science and are ready to take the FAA exams
for their airframe and powerplant certificate.

Avionics News: Do you have any active
internships or apprentice programs with local
MROs or OEMs?
Fortier: For the past two decades, LETU
students have had opportunities for paid
internships with Duncan Aviation, Collins
Aerospace and others. While only two or three
of our top students get intern opportunities, the
ones we do send are impacted greatly by their
work at these companies and actually have an
impact on the companies they work with.
When students intern with Duncan in the
avionics shop, they are helping do certifications,
troubleshooting of systems, and installations in a
wide variety of corporate aircraft. In their work
at Collins Aerospace, students work alongside
the engineers designing, integrating and testing
state of-the-art avionics systems.

Avionics News: Do you partner with local industry
for support or guidance?
Fortier: We do actively partner with industry for
guidance, but our advisors are not local to Longview,
Texas. We have an aviation advisory committee that
includes representatives from Collins Aerospace, Duncan
Aviation, Textron, Dynamic Aviation, Gulfstream, in
addition to representatives from several airlines. Currently,
our advisors meet twice a year and help keep us up to
date on trends and opportunities. It's been an extremely
beneficial program for everyone involved.
Avionics News: Why are students coming to your
school? Do you have any programs to actively recruit new
avionics students?
