installation and removal at any time.
Dynon also offers the SV-BAT-320 for its displays and modules.
The optional battery plugs into the Dynon instrument's wiring harness
for mounting near the avionics.
From the beginning of its Evolution line, Aspen Avionics made
an integral backup battery part of its instruments, whether a PFD or
MFD.
The battery automatically maintains its charge from the instrument
operating. The integral battery can be supplemented by an external
Aspen standby battery.
Several companies manufacture standby batteries for glass-cockpit
aircraft, among them True Blue Power, a division of Mid-Continent
Instrument Co. Inc.
An approved battery can also be added with a controller that
keeps the battery charged and switches on should the main electrical
system fail. Field approval is possible with the right components and
a technician who knows aircraft - or an avionics shop that already
works on the aircraft.
Another option involves using a second battery wired to the main
buss with a switch to connect it when needed. A battery monitor
for that second battery would be needed to inform the pilot of the
battery's charge state. This also is an avenue used via the fieldapproval route.
And some pilots carry a spare battery in the form of a jump-start
system and use a male lighter adapter wired to the electrical system to
plug into the lighter socket and send power back through the main buss.
It's awkward but functional in a pinch. But a pilot using this
approach should remember to periodically top off the battery charge
lest it be dead when needed.

Time Sensitive
Depending on the capacity of any standby battery, the aviator
using it should be familiar with how long such a battery can keep the
panel powered. That's a job for the avionics shop, to help a customer
understand the time available with a given battery and the needed
appliances to complete the flight.
Many standby battery options say they can last 45 minutes or so;
some can go more than an hour while others can power the devices on
the circuit for as much as four hours.
The pilot should know to shut down nonessential electrical
components to help stretch the time the battery provides usable power.
The important thing is for the pilot to understand how long that
aftermarket electrical helper can keep the panel powered and to treat
the circumstances with the urgency they deserve - and get on the
ground as soon as possible.
