Garmin goes large - again
Avionics powerhouse Garmin International debuted
a number of new products and improvements during
a detailed briefing at its stand the day before the
opening of AirVenture Oshkosh.
At the top of the stack came Garmin's all-new
GNC 355, a new IFR GPS navigator with localizer
performance with vertical approach guidance
capabilities and an integral VHF communications
radio. Garmin designed the GNC 355 for Class I
and II aircraft weighing less than 6,000 pounds, and
experimental, amateur-built and light-sport aircraft.
The company said it expects a broad AML STC in
August covering more than 700 aircraft models, with
European Aviation Safety Agency certification to
follow at a later date.
The key to the GNC 355 is its avionics-standard
form factor - 2 inches tall by 6.26 inches wide, with
touchscreen control. Garmin offers the GNC 355
system in both a 25 kHz and an 8.33 kHz frequency
version. The later version gets the designation of GNC
355A and is priced $700 higher than the base GNC
355's $6,995 price.
Garmin also announced updates to two display
units, the already popular G5 PFD and the G3X
Touch.
Garmin's G5 gains outside air temperature along the
bottom of the display, and true airspeed displayed on
top with the addition of a new temperature probe and
Garmin adapter.
The EAB-targeted G3X gains a new stand-alone
multifunction display configuration with an optional
engine indication system. Garmin also plans new
wireless engine data streaming for pilots for realtime display on the Garmin Pilot app and flight data
logging stored on an SD card. New software and

hardware for the G5 and G3X Touch were expected to
be available in August.
Also due by August: delivery of approved GFC 500
and GFC 600 flight-control systems.
Garmin targeted the lower-cost GFC 500 at the
single-engine piston aircraft, and the initial STCs
were pending for Cessna's Cessna 182RG.
The upscale GFC 600 is designed for twin-engine
and high-performance single-engine aircraft with
approval pending for Piper's PA-46 (models 310P
JetPROP and 350P JetPROP) and Socata's TBM
(models 700, A, B, C1, C2 and N (TBM 850)).
For the TBM 700/850 equipped with G600 TXi
flight displays, the GFC 600's approval includes
several new features, among them a low-bank mode
and emergency-descent mode. In low-bank mode,
activated manually by the pilot at any altitude or
automatically at higher altitudes, autopilot roll limit is
lowered to increase passenger comfort.
The Emergency Descent Mode automatically lowers
the plane to a preset altitude in the event of lost cabin
pressurization to help avoid hypoxia.
uAvionix developing 1090ES ADS-B
model compatible with Aireon satellite
monitoring network
With the success of its skyBeacon and tailBeacon
978 MHz ADS-B Out solutions, uAvionix continues
to innovate, now tackling a 1090ES solution with a
refresh rate compatible with Aireon's now-operating
satellite monitoring network.
The skyBeacon X will adhere to the diversity requirement
of NavCanada, which is a part owner and client of Aireon
and the air-traffic system operator in Canada.
Christian Ramsey, uAvionix president, explained,
"We specifically designed skyBeacon and tailBeacon
to target a low cost of installation, and we are doing it
again with skyBeacon X."
Ramsey added that though the skyBeacon X won't be
available for U.S. operators trying to
meet the Jan. 1, 2020, deadline, the
1090-MHz Mode S model should
be available - and TSOs - prior to
the Phase 3 deadline of Canada's
mandate.
That mandate requires 1090MHz ADS-B Out with antenna
diversity below 12,500 feet mean
sea level and becomes effective in
2023. q
