How to ruin a
$50,000 investment

otwithstanding the value of an investment
- whether a single radio installation; a new
primary flight display; or a full panel upgrade
- the quickest way to ruin that investment is to use the wrong
chemical cleaners.
According to David Tulis in an AOPA article titled Improper
disinfectant appears to damage two Skyhawks, "An aircraft
renter with a distillery-produced sanitizer meant well, but
improper disinfecting techniques damaged the instrument
panels of two Cessna 172s at Florida's Atlas Aviation and
required costly repairs."
Today, everyone is focused on disinfecting around the
coronavirus. We see it at home, work, the grocery stores and
even around aircraft. But unlike the countertops in your house
or the shopping carts at your favorite stores, aircraft, and the
products used in aircraft, are special!
The issue of using safe and proper cleaning products is
not a new issue. In the 1990s, the industry was reacting to
environmental awareness, and the sudden focus on aircraft
cleaning, degreasing and depainting caused the industry to look
toward alternative, environmentally friendly cleaners, solvents
and paint-strippers.
One of my favorite examples is watching passengers get on a
commercial aircraft. You know who I'm talking about; you've
seen them yourself. They get into their seat and deep clean

cleaning. As is common, the entrepreneurs are coming out in
force with the newest, greatest, and most-effective cleaning
systems. As our conversation focused on the chemicals and
processes, the one underlying factor was that the chemical or
process "can do no harm." And in aviation, we can't guess or
assume; we must know if we are causing harm.
As we look at the CDC list of disinfectant compounds, it can
be overwhelming. But they generally fall into the categories of
flammables, solvents, acids and bases.
Even the most-common household disinfectants can cause
damage to aircraft. Let's take something as simple as hydrogen
peroxide. According to the National Library of Medicine at
