correctly located and oriented for the aircraft's position,
heading and altitude.
Conversely, it's this database dependence that
underlies the strengths of SVS: its consistency,
reliability, ease of use and flexibility. It portrays the
world outside the cockpit as if the whole world is in
daylight with CAVU visual flight rules conditions:
ceiling unlimited, visibility unlimited - regardless of
conditions outside the aircraft. Whereas, the pilot flying
through zero-zero conditions may see nothing beyond
the aircraft's nose.
But since SVS doesn't really "see" anything, it
portrays what the software says is out there. Thus, no
worries about an image occluded by smoke or fog,
torrential downpours or snowstorms.
Whether the pilot made a good call by knowingly
launching into such conditions we'll leave to another
article. Again, if the object existed for the latest scan,
that object will display on an up-to-date SVS display.
Arguably, the benefit of SVS that drives its popularity
is its portability and flexibility. For pilots of aircraft
with a glass cockpit, SVS may be able to play on the
primary flight display if the cockpit avionics is equipped
to load and run the software. And virtually all of today's
instrument flight rules GPS navigators employ a version
of SVS, as do the leading glass-cockpit integrated
avionics packages.
For an aircraft renter or club member, there's no need
to go without SVS. They can load the software onto a
tablet or smartphone or notebook computer as long as
the host device can receive GPS satellite broadcasts to
provide appropriate orientation for the images.
That's a boon to renters and flying club members, as
well as aircraft owners with limited budgets for avionics
upgrades. And as noted earlier, many of today's most
popular EFB programs host a version of SVS.
EVS and EFVS 101
Enhanced vision systems, or EVS, work via an
imaging sensor - a digital camera or millimeter radar -
designed to see in a specific light range in the infrared
and visible spectrums. So what the sensor sees is what
you get.

Variations in the sensor type and differences in the
occlusion blocking visual sight may affect the ability
of the sensor to pick up the photons of light emanating
from the world out there in the clag and beyond.
EVS works independent of software and terrain
scans. If there's a truck on the end of the runway, a
pilot on short final should see it. Some enhanced vision
systems offer such high sensitivity that a ghost image
may exist for an object well after it's moved on - but
there should be no mistaking a ghost image for the real
thing, the differences between them are so strong.
But doubt not - if a solid image of an aircraft, tug,
truck, human or animal shows on the EVS display, it's
there and pilots should respond accordingly.
Shortcomings of EVS generally stem from the
limitations of the sensor or sensors used to capture
the infrared photons emitted by virtually everything -
humans, animals and wildlife, buildings, trees, towers,
mountains, roads, highways, rivers, streams and bodies
of water. Not all IR sensors detect infrared to the same
degree of sensitivity or to the same wavelength.
Now, take all of the traits and features of EVS and
display them on a HUD - versus on a panel-mounted
display - and you have an enhanced flight vision
system, or EFVS. And EFVS is quickly spreading into
cockpits equipped with either a HUD or a wearable
HUD, the newest way to see PFD info - now with
weather images courtesy of the EVS sensors.
CVS 101
Pilots flying an aircraft with a combined vision
system, or CVS, enjoy the best of both worlds: a
reliable pairing that shows an everything-scanned SVS
image with an overlaid real-time image from an EVS
sensor, presented for the pilot's real-time use.
This package is also known as an enhanced flight
vision system when presented on a head-up display
in the pilot's field of view. These most-sophisticated
variations of CVS display their combined overlaid with
the PFD's display of airspeed, altitude, attitude, vertical
speed, heading and turn indication.
As a feature of the HUD system, the graphics
are projected on a combiner that makes the image
appear to exist beyond the windshield, out at the
point where human eyes achieve infinity focus. So
the pilot need never take eyes off the out-of-the-
