n the not-too-distant future, you could be wearing
a special patch that tests for toxins, monitors your
health, and lets you move effortlessly through security
checkpoints and log on to and operate smart devices, equipment
and vehicles. It's a valuable bit of tech wizardry, especially
if you work in an aircraft repair station, on an airfield,
in a manufacturing facility, research station or
medical setting. It's possible that the experts
at PFC Flexible Circuits just might be
the ones who created the wearable
flexible printed circuit boards at the
heart of the system.
Headquartered in Scarborough,
Ontario, Canada, near Toronto,
PFC manufactures and assembles
flexible and rigid-flex printed circuit
boards for a variety of products, especially those that involve
compact, three-dimensional and complex designs.
The company's circuits are utilized in satellites, radar
systems, jet engine controls, surveillance systems, plasma
displays, high-speed cables, digital cameras, hearing aids,
heart pacemakers, defibrillators, audio/video mixers and more.
They're even in ventilators, the lifesaving breathing machines

that dominated the spring news headlines.
"We've spent a lot of time recently working on products
specifically for the coronavirus," said Gus Trakas, vice
president of business development, who
joined PFC in August 2019. "There
are some components we build
that are actually key components
of ventilators, and unless we
supply them, there are certain
customers who won't be able to
build. In fact, we're adding staff
to support a new large medical
contract."
Along with adding staff, PFC is undergoing
a major upgrade to its wet processing equipment.
"Our wet process equipment is all being upgraded and will
be coming online in Q3 of this year," Trakas said. "We also
just added a brand-new SMT assembly line. The upgrades will
further increase our quality as well as drive our lead times down.
We'll be able to deliver products even faster and take on a lot
more quick-turn projects. Of course, we are continuing to invest
heavily to ensure that we continue to move up the tech scale as
designs become more and more complex."
