"It's possible there will be some lingering mistrust of (traditional)
shared transportation, which will lead to more (ground) traffic
congestion," Wulff said. "This concern is both an advantage and
disadvantage for UAM. eVTOLs will allow for lower-capacity
transportation, but how do we keep eVTOLs from becoming virus
spreaders? Operators will need to demonstrate adequate disinfection
procedures to gain the public's confidence."
Obviously, the longer the pandemic goes on and worldwide
economies feel the effects of the illness itself and related quarantines
or significantly decreased mobility, the more substantial the financial
impact might be to these companies if financiers are pushed to
reevaluate long-term funding options.
The pandemic also adds near-term and long-term costs to both
development and actual operations. Purchasing personal protective
equipment to allow employees to continue working safely and
increasing sanitization schedules once operational seem like minor
costs but add up over time.
In the long-term though, eVTOL designers and CAMI believe the
industry's future remains strong.
"The key driver behind introducing eVTOL technology is a desire
to move to cleaner forms of transport," said Walker-Jones. "This had
started long before the pandemic came along and will continue after it.
That said, there's an interesting dynamic where people might choose
to live and work differently in a post-pandemic world - perhaps only
visiting their office once or twice a week and living out of town, which
transport like this could facilitate. Similarly, perhaps it will drive a
desire to take business trips and vacations closer to home, meaning a
greater demand for the regional travel we offer."
Several events within the eVTOL space during the height of the
COVID-19 crisis support Lilium's assertion the industry is going
strong. Wisk recently announced it will test its Cora aircraft in New
Zealand. CityAirbus, the second full-scale eVTOL prototype from
Airbus, recently demonstrated autonomous takeoff, hover and landing
with the push of one button. The U.S. Air Force Agility Prime program
hosted a weeklong virtual event and continues to have well-attended
webinars. The Vertical Flight Society is also hosting frequent online
events. Industry working groups and committees continue their efforts
to guide policy and develop risk-based safety measures.
"While COVID-19 restrictions have slowed down activity across
the board, we don't anticipate it affecting our goal of launching
commercial operations in 2025," Walker-Jones asserted.
For those involved in more-traditional segments of aviation, CAMI,
Lilium, and others in eVTOL and UAM fields are optimistic this
industry segment's fortunate position might be a rising tide that lifts
all boats, creating new opportunities for ground handlers, component
manufacturers, repair stations, and more. q
