Key to implementation of UAM operations is the use of UAM corridors
and a cooperative approach among UAM operators. These corridors,
which will essentially be an established highway from one landing site
to another, will allow safe UAM operations without use of 'tactical' air
traffic control separation services, using community-based rules.

he Federal Aviation Administration recently
published Version 1.0 of the Urban Air Mobility
Concept of Operations in coordination with
the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
and industry partners. According to the agency, the
document's goal is to provide a common frame of
reference to support the FAA, NASA, industry, and other
stakeholders to mature to specific UAM implementation
methods and detailed operations procedures.
The ConOps is a crucial step to safely integrating
UAM traffic into the national airspace system, especially
as many manufacturers of electric vertical takeoff and
landing aircraft continue a strong push for commercial
operations in this decade.
An opening letter from Steve Bradford, the FAA's
chief scientific and technical advisor for architecture and
NextGen development, calls the ConOps document an
"initial stage of work in progress."
The FAA expects an "evolutionary" approach,
engaging with industry, NASA and community
stakeholders.
Version 1.0 of the ConOps lays out some important
concepts and principles for UAM in the national
air traffic system, seeking to answer how air traffic
management will administer future UAM operations.
Corridors
Key to implementation of UAM operations is the use
of UAM corridors and a cooperative approach among
UAM operators. These corridors, which will essentially

be an established highway from one landing site to
another, will allow safe UAM operations without use of
"tactical" air traffic control separation services, using
community-based rules.
Within corridors, all aircraft will operate under UAM
specific rules, procedures, and performance requirements
and must meet specific performance standards.
Fixed-wing aircraft and unmanned aircraft system
traffic management aircraft may cross UAM corridors.
Helicopters and UAM aircraft may operate within or cross
UAM corridors. Unlike traditional operations, operations
within corridors will not vary with airspace class.
Outside of established UAM corridors, operations
will adhere to relevant ATM and UTM rules based on
operation type, airspace class, and altitude.
According to the FAA, the corridor concept is
an "evolution from current helicopter routing to
UAM-specific corridors and associated performance
requirements and procedures that reduce operational
complexity."
"At present, the degree to which some, or all, of
these UAM operations will require current air traffic
management systems and services is undefined. To the
degree that these operations require current ATM systems
and services, the increasing number of UAM operations
may soon challenge the current capabilities of the ATM
infrastructure and air traffic control workforce resources,"
said the ConOps.
