have to change oils and fuel like you do in a gas or diesel
engine, so the servicing requirements are a lot less. And
they're a little bit more reliable as long as you keep the
batteries serviced."
Expanding mobile service, parts inventory
Werner acquired Carolina GSE in 2018 from founder
Mike Blout, a pilot for Piedmont Airlines. Werner, also a
pilot for the airline, flew right seat in the Dash 8 as Blout's
first officer for six years.
"We were flying together and working at GSE at the
same time," said Werner, who began flying in high school
and continued in Purdue University's flight program. "After
about six years of flying, I decided to retire and work at
GSE full time. Two years ago, Mike ended up retiring, and
I purchased the company from him. At the time, it was just
Mike and me, and we had two service techs. Now we're up
to 15 employees, and we're actively looking to hire so we
can expand our outside service."

Carolina GSE's mobile service unit travels to hangars
and other facilities to repair and troubleshoot ground service
equipment on location. Next year, Werner also plans to
increase the company's inventory of readily available
equipment and spare parts.
"We want to be sure if something goes down or flight
operations have issues, we're here to help troubleshoot the
equipment and also have the right spare parts on the shelf to
be able to assist them," he said.
When asked why the company is able to grow so quickly,
Werner said he believes it's because he and the staff have
worked hard to develop good relationships with maintenance
managers as well as with the technicians working in the
hangars.
"We're very responsive and everybody here is willing
to help, whether the customer is setting up their hangar or
purchasing a new aircraft, whether they need a spare part or
help troubleshooting the equipment," Werner said. "We can
help from start to finish." q
