Joaquin "Jay" Salazar is well known in the
industry for creating innovative solutions for
Part 25 aircraft. He's traveled the world, working on aircraft
and installing electronic systems, performing test flights and
certification. From commercial airliners to military aircraft,
he's tackled big projects for big clients.
Salazar recently developed the Federal Aviation
Administration supplemental type certificate for a satellite
landing system installation on the Boeing 737 Classic
aircraft as well as additional STCs for an ADS-B installation
on the Boeing 777/757/737 and MD-80 aircraft.
Over the years, LB Aircraft Engineering has created
more than 40 custom STCs for a variety of aircraft systems,
including CPDLC, FANS-1/A, ADS-B, EFIS, TAWS,
SATCOM, AHRS and many more. Salazar has been
involved in some way with nearly all of the projects.
His experience and expertise run deep. He's an FAAauthorized designated engineering representative for electrical
systems and equipment on Part 23, 25 and 27 aircraft with no
limitations, and he's authorized to perform major alterations
and repairs on those aircraft with no limitations.
Last year, in the company's workshop, Salazar and his
team built a Boeing B737-NG Simulation Integration Lab to

test a prototype of an enhanced flight vision system. They
wired the test lab from the ground up using actual LRUs and
connected the systems as if they were being used in a fully
operational aircraft.
"It was a very involved undertaking," Salazar said. "There
are no instructions for this type of project. I'm very happy
with the results."
Along with engineering and design, LB Aircraft
Engineering offers in-house manufacturing under its FAA parts
manufacturer approval. The company assembles all of the
installation kits, harnesses, and parts for each STC that it owns.
Beginning in Chile
Salazar's legacy with avionics and electronics began five
decades ago in Chile when he applied for the position of
electrical flight engineer at Lan Chile Airline.
"Out of over 300 applicants, I was one of the handful
chosen and began training to fly a Sud Aviation Dual
Turbofan Caravelle, the first medium-range, jet-powered
airliner," Salazar said. "I flew domestically all across Chile.
That is when my passion for aviation really began to grow.
Shortly thereafter, I was upgraded to fly the Boeing 707
and, as the chief of engineering, was sent to Germany for a
12-month training program by Lufthansa. The experience
solidified my passion for engineering and aviation."
