When we decided to move up to a faster airplane,
that starter plane fetched $25,000, thanks to a couple
of improvements we made to it. And the next plane - a
160 mph retractable - cost us $40,000. Our neighbors'
SUVs all cost more than our airplane.
The bottom line is this: With careful shopping for the
plane best suited for the flying planned, a new pilot can
be an aircraft owner for less money than the ride driven
to the airport.
Pilot training: Options for
lowering costs
Cash is king. The phrase has
more cachet in the securities
market than it does in these days
of low-interest credit and lengthy
investment terms. But in flight
training, it can be a useful meme
to remember when searching for a
flight-training opportunity.
Flight schools have some great
advantages for those who live
near one - and can afford them.
Locally, I've seen flight schools
promote costs of $10,000 and
more to complete the private-pilot
syllabus, based on 20 hours of
dual, 20 hours of solo, and another
20 hours split between dual and solo, because the
average student needs more than the FAA-minimum 40
hours to get to the check ride.
These flight schools often provide late-model singles
with integrated avionics stacks. They also often include
their own ground school and the costs of the written
exam.
And they'll finance the training which may add
to the costs. With cheap credit and many businesses
struggling against the dual drags of COVID-19 and the
economic downturn it spawned, the credit terms may
be more favorable. There are alternatives to the flightschool route, but the prospect may have to dig to find
them.
Many small airports have an independent CFI, the

person who can legally teach and sign off on milestones
in the process. The independent flight instructor often
has a training aircraft. And often, both cost less from
the independent than from the flight school.
The CFI can help the student through a ground
school, such as ones from King Schools or Sporty's
Pilot Shop. The CFI may have those training packages
already, precluding the need to buy them.
Another useful option for lowering training costs
involves booking flight instruction time and aircraft
rental in blocks. Blocks of 10, 15, 20 or more can come
in at lower costs.
But be careful in negotiating block-time costs. The
would-be student may want to
avoid a CFI who talks about
landing that charter-pilot or airline
job, a sign that CFI may move on
with little or no warning - while
holding funds paid for instruction
and airtime.
Now, about that aircraft. Unless
the prospect expects to buy a
technically advanced aircraft,
taking instruction in such an
aircraft - one with a full glass
cockpit and a fully integrated
avionics package such as the
Garmin G1000 or Avidyne Release
9 package - flight instruction in an
airplane with an analog six-pack is
completely acceptable. And less expensive.
One final tip. Some student-pilots opt to buy their
starter airplane before starting flight instruction after
finding an independent CFI willing to forego the rental
fees for the CFI's airplane. Then the student-pilot isn't
renting the instruction airplane but flying the owned
aircraft.
The benefits are many, with lower cost just the start.
Scheduling ceases to be a problem when the student
owns the plane. Familiarity is another benefit. It's
less likely that the student will show up only to learn
that day's lesson will be in a different aircraft. And
the student will have an airplane to use immediately
upon successfully soloing and passing that check ride.
That same airplane would be a good candidate for
proceeding into instrument training.
