Fuel account?
Sure, if economically viable
Many airports - particularly smaller ones
operating their own FBO services - offer tenant
pilots the option of buying fuel in advance at a
discount. The cost savings can be helpful.
Another option often available is a fuel account,
in which the aircraft owner contracts to buy a
certain amount of fuel at a price below the published
price, with billing to the pilot every month.
For tenant pilots, residency can have other
advantages, such as pull-out, put-back service, and
knowing someone tends the airport when you're
away from the field.
Not every airport hosts a maintenance shop, but
it would be to the owner's advantage to stage the
plane on an airport that does. And if not resident on
the field, at least try to find an airport a short flight
from that home field.
Learn where the best maintenance shop is, meet
the owner, and start building a relationship with the
people you want to work on your plane.
Ancillary expenses:
Why buy new when used does the job?
The most overriding incentive for buying some of
this stuff new comes down to the warranty available.
New stuff usually comes with a warranty against
breakage or failure.
But the used stuff that outlived the warranty
period is working still. So, chances are, it's good for
continued use.
What ancillary stuff? Well, the student-pilot
will need most of this from the start, so here's a
basic list:
1.	 Headset - the student needs this to plug into
the aircraft intercom and talk to the CFI and
passengers when the pilot gets to that point.
Budget headsets can do the job, but a smarter
option in the long term would be a headset
with active noise reduction built in. The
difference comes into play on long flights and
in noisier planes. If the student buys a passive
headset, not to worry. They can be sold to
another student - or, converted to ANR with
a kit.

2.	 Tablet computer - the key to using an
electronic flight bag program, which provides
all the air-navigation documents the student
pilot needs and the licensed pilot must have.
Those documents needed initially include
VFR navigation sectionals, with IFR en
route charts for the instrument student
and pilot, and for the instrument pilot the
approach plates, standard terminal-arrival
procedures and standard-instrument departure
procedures. The choice of an EFB program
should be made in light of the kind of flying
the pilot plans. And some EFBs can work
with ADS-B systems to display weather
and traffic. Others can be used to plan and
file flight plans with the Federal Aviation
Administration. The owners of iPads are
half there since the dominant EFB programs
work on that platform, though there are some
compatible with Android hardware. The
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association offers
a free EFB solution to its members, and the
FAA supports another free option.
Community: General aviation's
own self-help system
The final way to help keep the costs of flying
as low as possible is the local aviation community
for the student and newly minted pilot. Airport
support groups, local flying clubs, the AOPA, and
chapters of the Experimental Aircraft Association
are all parts of a vast community of general aviation
members, and they can be of immeasurable help to
the new member of that community. Then there's
the Commemorative Air Force, Vintage Aircraft
Association, soaring clubs, sky-diving clubs - they
all cross-pollinate and overlap.
Whether shopping for a plane, a maintenance
shop, a useful airframe and powerplant mechanic,
or a good CFI, the locals are generally the best
source of information about the general aviation
community where they live.
Visit the local airports, ask around, introduce
yourself and join the community. Those folks will
help you save money and find those talents needed
as part of the aviation community. q
