ptometric measurement clarity is 20/20,
which is what the average individual
can see on an eye chart from a distance
of 20 feet with or without corrective lenses. It is not
perfect vision. That would be 20/15, the ability to read
at 20 feet what the average person can clearly see from
15 feet. The magnitude of the second measurement
identifies the degree of imperfect vision. From 20
feet, someone who must read the line above of larger
letters has 20/30 vision. If the 2020
AEA Rate & Labor Survey was an eye
chart, clarity seems to be in the 20/400
range.
Peering through the fog of
unpredictability rising from the
pandemic of COVID-19, the only
nationwide consensus seems to be the
significant change in what avionics
repair stations expect their business
to do in the coming year. The Aircraft
Electronics Association collected their
answers between June and Labor Day,
according to Mike Adamson, AEA
president and chief executive officer,
which was about the time people and
businesses were starting to come out
of quarantine.
Some might say this was the middle of the
COVID-19 crisis, but no one knows for sure.
Exacerbating the unpredictable course of any virus
is an unpredictable response to it. Rather than
compiling verified scientific experience to agree on
a nationwide action plan, politicians have promoted
differences of opinion and shifted the responsibility
until some federal, state, county, or local entity accepts
responsibility and acts.
Sustaining a business in this environment is a
challenge when everyone is working with different
requirements and restrictions. What does a business
do when officials shut it down, but a competitor is
open across the state, county or city limits? At least

the authorities agreed that avionics repair stations
make necessary contributions, and their employees
are essential to the continued operation of the aviation
infrastructure in the United States.
Adding to the unpredictability is the economy's
unexpected reactions. Certainly, no one was
surprised that the virus lockdown would cause
furloughs or layoffs for millions of people, driving
the unemployment figure to levels not seen since

the Great Depression. Yet the economy seemed not
to notice. Real estate transactions in both sales and
new construction seemed to be booming, and home
remodeling companies report increasing business as
well.
In the retrofit avionics market, heading into the first
quarter of 2020, shops said they were still working
through the backlog of ADS-B installations and filling
openings in their schedules with autopilots and panel
upgrades, according to Adamson, who doubts that
shops furloughed or laid off any of their employees.
