Examples of those operators include aerial firefighting,
business aviation, emergency medical services, search
and rescue, air transport, oil and gas, law enforcement,
and civil services providers.
Pole-to-pole broadband connectivity
In addition to being a value-added manufacturer
for both the multiband and broadband Iridium Certus
solutions, SKYTRAC is an Iridium Certus service
provider. This will enable the company to provide
clients, as well as other Iridium partners that are not
official SPs, with the new-generation Iridium Certus
connectivity.
" Iridium Certus ushers in a new era of globally
available connectivity for operators looking for higherbandwidth satellite communications solutions, " Van
der Heul said. " Along with the higher speeds, the key
differentiator for Iridium Certus versus other satellite
connectivity providers is true global coverage. "
Because of this, operators traveling over the North
and South poles, as well as other areas around the
world, routinely fall outside the coverage areas
of other satellite systems. While those areas are
shrinking, there are times when you're out of touch.
" With the Iridium network, no matter where you are,
you have always had full connectivity and coverage, "
Van der Heul added. " The problem was the speeds
were limited. And now with Certus, that coverage is
finally available at broadband speeds. It's a significant
development for all types of businesses, government,
military, civil service aircraft and helicopter operators.
" Our SDL-350 broadband terminal can operate 352
kbps. To meet each operator's needs, it can scale up or
down, so we're not limited on transfer speeds. In fact,
we have found that 176 kbps is the sweet spot for the
majority of our customers. "
Because of this, Van der Heul stressed that for
operators looking for a full-cabin, mass IFE system,
Iridium Certus connectivity is not their solution.
" We are not going to provide live, in-flight
connectivity for a cabin full of people, " he said. " We
are going to provide high-speed connections for flight
crews, limited VIP/business connectivity users, and

those needing real-time connectivity for special uses
and mission applications.
" Say, air ambulances needing to send medical
information or firefighters or law-enforcement
officials needing to send streaming FLIR imagery
to base operations. VIPs can do as much as holding
live video conferencing, voice over internet, or
just responding to emails. The system is capable of
delivering these levels of connectivity anywhere in the
world. "
Along with the real-time, person-to-person
connectivity, he added that the SKYTRAC system is
ideal for applications including flight data monitoring,
real-time system health and usage monitoring,
advanced situational awareness, and lots more - all
depending on the terminal's operational bandwidth
levels.
Its combination of broadband connectivity and
global availability also make it an ideal solution to
meet the International Civil Aviation Organization's
Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System
compliance functions.
" The ICAO GADSS mandate is a direct result of
the disappearance of flight MH370, " Van der Heul
said. " It requires the full-time autonomous flight
tracking and distress notification of certain categories
of commercial aircraft, to make sure we never lose an
aircraft again. "
Another capability enabled by Iridium Certus,
and the SKYTRAC hardware, is 4D trajectory
management, which will help operators optimize the
trajectory and track of every flight.
" 4D trajectory technology relies on having accurate
position information from the aircraft to optimize the
flight path and traffic coordination, " he explained.
" The goal is to reduce each aircraft's flight time, fuel
use, and traffic conflicts to achieve shorter flight
times. This requires collecting data from various
aircraft systems and then applying it to the population
of aircraft on that route. Then you add weather and
airport information. Again, it all starts with accurate,
real-time aircraft positioning. "
SKYTRAC SDL-350: One size fits all (almost)
While a number of SATCOM systems can provide
even higher-speed connectivity than Iridium Certus,
the sheer physical size of the antennas, and some LRU
components, mean those capabilities are not available to
