That's the story for young Mac, who made his landmark
solo flight on July 2 - a historically significant date - on the
same patch of ground where his grandmother and father all
learned to fly, where his father labored as a ramp worker,
where his grandmother soloed years earlier, and where
some of aviation's most famous names stopped to visit
when the runway was still called
Copeland Airport.
He'll be the third generation of
Copelands in aviation.

Marilyn took her flying quite seriously. She competed
in more than 30 coast-to-coast air races. She also served as
president of the Ninety-Nines - the organization of licensed
women pilots for which Earhart served as the first president.
Later, Marilyn became the chair of the restoration of Earhart's
childhood home in Atchison, Kansas.
The second generation of
Copelands in aviation was Mac's
father, David, who served as
another important influence for
Mac's aviation ambitions. For
one, David also soloed out of
K31, flying 16 airplanes on his
16th birthday. David also worked
at Copeland Airport as assistant
manager - a first step to David's
lengthy career in aviation.
Today, David Copeland
serves as vice president of sales
at Mid-Continent Instruments
and Avionics in Wichita, Kansas
- the latest stop in a career
that's taken him to jobs with
General Motors, Jeep Corp.,
American Airlines, Cessna
Aircraft, Raytheon, Beechcraft,
Mooney Airplane Co., Ametek
Aerospace and Defense and as
a private consultant to several
smaller firms.
With two generations to seed
his interest, is it any wonder that
Mac Copeland followed the same track toward the cockpit
followed by his Copeland grandparents and his father?
Such lines of succession aren't always drawn. Mac is
David's youngest, but the first to feel the inexorable draw to
the cockpit.

A little background:
About that date
Not only was July 2 a historic
day for the Copeland family,
as you'll shortly understand,
but a remembrance of several
aviation icons that came before
Mac. Three aviators that planted
their aircraft on that very ground
made aviation history.
First was Charles Lindbergh
who landed at Copeland Airport
to meet with Walter Beech in
1929 following his nonstop New
York-to-Paris trans-Atlantic
flight in 1927.
Mac chose the date of
July 2 in remembrance of
Amelia Earhart - and Mac's
grandmother, Marilyn Copeland.
It was on July 2, 1937, that
Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared
on the next-to-last leg of her attempt to circle the globe
around the equator.
And so the first generation of Copelands joined the aviation
community.
Earhart served as a role model who had a big influence
on Marilyn, who took up flying due to the historical values
that Earhart made in flight - as well as the lasting effects on
women in aviation.
Marilyn Copeland served as the general manager and coowner of Copeland Airport with her husband, John Copeland
- the instructor who taught her to fly and a former paratrooper.
