when returning that aircraft to service.
The best guidance for the owner/pilot contemplating
handling some of the maintenance on the owned aircraft
can start by reviewing Advisory Circular AC 20-106,
Aircraft Inspection for the General Aviation Aircraft Owner.
Within the 87 pages of AC 20-106, the owner/pilot can
find a section focused on inspection fundamentals, another
on inspection techniques, several appendices covering
general safety precautions, a guide to identifying types of
aviation fuels, information on the certificate of registration
and another on the certificate of airworthiness.
While the inspection guidance is useful, important
information, it's worth noting that reading the information
does not authorize the would-be owner/pilot-mechanic to
tackle any work not specifically identified by 43.3(g).
But following the information within 43.3(g) and AC
20-106 can help that owner/pilot learn and understand more
about the owned aircraft and why the A&P is a pilot's best

The three steps to helping a customer
understand why A&Ps are needed
When the aircraft owner approaches an A&P about
helping with some work, it's only fair to point out that
helping them takes the technician away from paying work
- and that another owner/pilot expects that work to be
performed, on-time, on-budget, and next. The benefit to the
maintainer is the opportunity to cement a mechanic-customer
relationship for all those other jobs and other times when
that licensed technician will be required for the work needed.
Many pilots appreciate the effort and may move on to
helping with the annual inspection. Annual inspections are
great opportunities to start a customer down the path to
performing some of the maintenance the FAA allows owner/
pilots to handle.
And with so many shops short of licensed help, having
a customer help can be helpful to the A&P in terms of
getting work out on-schedule and profitably. q
