"Nowadays, when we add to our fleet, we try to obtain
G1000-equipped aircraft, which reduces the number
of needed avionics changes," explained Bruce Harcey,
supervisor of avionics for MAF-U.S. "Modifications for our
planes include high-frequency shortwave radios, satellite
flight following systems, search and rescue direction-finding
equipment, FM VHF radios, and traffic systems. Other

charging ports and ANR headset power jacks."
Alternately, MAF's newest piston aircraft, a Cessna 172, is
upgraded with dual Garmin G5 electronic flight instruments,
removing the vacuum system and all mechanical gyros,
according to Harcey. The upgrade includes a new Garmin
GTN 650 GPS/nav/comm/MFD as well as instrument panels
that eliminate the original plastic overlays.
In 2019, MAF-U.S. upgraded two of its older Cessna
Caravans operating in Indonesia with Garmin G600 TXi
flight displays, Garmin GTN navigators, Garmin GTX
ADS-B Out/In transponders and Garmin GTS traffic
systems. Technicians also installed L3 ESI-500 electronic
standby indicators, thereby adding the required backup
system for attitude, airspeed and altitude. The enabled nav
option also allows CDI/VDI for both GPS and VLOC-based
navigation sources.
"The new instrument panels add a clean and simple look to
the sophisticated equipment behind the screens," Harcey said.
"The aircraft vacuum systems were removed entirely, leaving
no mechanical gyros. The completed upgrade resulted in 100
or more pounds of weight reduction for both aircraft. Our
third and final Caravan upgrade is scheduled for this year."
To track its aircraft around the world, MAF installs
v2track, which incorporates cellular and Iridium satellite
networks. A former MAF pilot founded the New Zealandbased maker of the system, according to Brad Hoaglun,
director of corporate communication for MAF-U.S.
V2track provides location updates every 15 seconds via
cellular service or in longer intervals via satellite. The system
helps keep bush pilots safe by keeping them connected.
