Complacency
A

s one of the "Dirty Dozen" of human factors,
the term complacency should not be new to
anyone. While the Skybrary describes complacency as "a feeling of self-satisfaction accompanied
by a loss of awareness of potential dangers," I suggest
another view of complacency that can be just as destructive, if not more. And that is organizational complacency: "We've always done it this way!"
As we migrate our way through the challenges of the
global pandemic, the one underlying question I hear
most is: What will the new norm be? Whether directly
or indirectly, it clearly appears that how we do business,
how we socialize, how we learn, how we support our
customers, how the agencies oversee the public, every
interaction between people has the potential to be, well,
different.
Historically, we saw online collaborative services as
early as the early 1990s (WebEx was founded in 1995).
But those early systems were expensive and cumbersome.
If we go back to the most recent societal disruptor, the
global financial meltdown of 2008/2009, and measure
the difference in the availability and technology of these
systems in the past decade, we can get a better feel for
true growth in the technology and overall acceptance of
these new collaborative tools.
While several of us take for granted many of the
communication tools that are supporting the social

restrictions in place over the past few months,
GoToMeeting was developed in 2004; GoToWebinar, the
preferred platform for Aircraft Electronics Association
webinars, was released in 2006; YouTube was created in
2005; Apple announced FaceTime in 2010 (with iPhone
4); and the popular Zoom didn't launch until 2012.

As we continue to adapt to the new social normal,
take this opportunity to look at your business and
ask yourself, are you doing aircraft and avionics
maintenance the same way you've always done it?
My point is this: It has been over a century since the
world last dealt with a global disruptive force of this
nature, and never before has there been the technology
available to mitigate and smooth many of the business
challenges exhibited by the pandemic and the resultant
physical distancing. As a result, it is not realistic to
assume that the new norms of the future will not include
these newfound technologies. In essence, claiming
"we've always done it this way" won't be a viable option
tomorrow.
As we look at "we've always done it this way," I want
to step away from the headlines of today and look toward
aircraft maintenance. For most of my career, I have done
maintenance primarily the same way, working on the
