GUIDE TO CLEANING AND DISINFECTING

antibacterial battle to the flight levels, owner/operators of
large-cabin aircraft, including some Falcons, Gulfstreams
and BBJs, have another weapon on their side: Aviation
Clean Air's full-time, proactive Ionization Purification
System.
The ACA system is installed as part of the aircraft's
environmental control system, so it's virtually providing
full-time disinfection. Like the portable system, the unit
functions electronically to produce positive and negative
ions, which form from the oxygen and hydrogen molecules
in the air. The technology replicates and accelerates
nature's cleaning process, effectively and naturally
neutralizing airborne and surface viruses.

Continuing to evaluate the type
certificate data sheet, let's look at
the Data Pertinent To All Models
section on revision 22 of TCDS
A00009CH, that is for the Cirrus
Design Corporation SR20, R22 and
SR22T, dated Nov. 18, 2019. After
scrolling through all of the interesting
things pertinent to each model like
Engines, Fuel, Engine Limitations, and
Propellers, you find a section titled
Data Pertinent To All Models. Here you
will find the certification basis for each
model of aircraft, but also any special
conditions. For avionics, you will
notice that the FAA had issued a special
condition (23-134-SC) specific for
protection of systems for high-intensity
radiated fields, for models SR20 and
SR22.
With the introduction of new
aircraft, new construction methods,
and new technologies comes the
consideration of high-intensity
radiated fields and electromagnetic
interference. The FAA, in its Order
8110.46, considered changes to wire
shielding that may affect high-intensity
radiated fields and electromagnetic
interference. Modifications to
approved avionics equipment that
might affect reliability or airworthiness
- to be a major alteration.
As we begin seeing more of the
next-generation aircraft, doing what
you have always done, without
consideration of the changing
technology or aircraft, will always be
challenging. Complacency can cause,
at the best, costly rework; and at the
worst, failed systems when they are
needed most. As we continue to adapt
to the new social normal, take this
opportunity to look at your business
and ask yourself, are you doing aircraft
and avionics maintenance the same
way you've always done it? Is it
still appropriate, applicable and not
contrary to the OEM's data? q

Cleaning iPads
With so many iPads in aircraft cockpits, you must
clean and disinfect them. While they're a lot like
touchscreen avionics, there are a few particular steps Apple
recommends for cleaning and disinfecting these units.
*	 Always unplug all cables and turn the iPad off.
*	 The iPad has an oleophobic coating, which rejects the
adhesion of oils on the screen. To maintain that coating,
gently wipe the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid
using abrasive materials like paper towels.
*	 Do not use window cleaners, household cleaners,
compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia
or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide.
*	 Avoid allowing any liquids into any of the connectors
or area between the glass and the metal housing.
*	 To disinfect an iPad, use a 70% isopropyl alcohol
wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. Again, do not
use any cleaners containing ammonia or bleach.
Gone, but not forgotten
With any luck, by the time you read this story, the
COVID-19 pandemic may be in the rearview mirror. But
that doesn't mean we can be any less proactive in our war
against germs.
Simms said that as part of Duncan Aviation's aircraft
disinfection program, its customers can have the aircraft
cleaned again right before they pick it up. Customers
can also opt to bring their aircraft back to one of Duncan
Aviation's facilities on a scheduled basis to have it cleaned
and disinfected.
While periodic cleaning is definitely a step in the right
direction, every time passengers enter the cabin, they bring
in a host of nasties. Of course, crews and maintainers can
take a proactive approach and wipe the surfaces down
between trips. That certainly helps. q
