aircraft. The EFIS-D10A or EFIS-D100 can replace one's
existing primary attitude indicator or added as a backup. The
updated approved model list covers many Beechcraft, Cessna,
Grumman, Mooney, Maule and Piper designs.
Installation of both products under the $100 EAA STC
ultimately requires approval from an A&P with inspection
authorization and an FAA Form 337. But aircraft owners who
work on their aircraft under the supervision and approval of
an appropriately rated mechanic could apply this STC to their
aircraft in that manner. And these two were just the start.
Two years later, in March 2018, Dynon announced STC
approval for its sophisticated SkyView HDX system and
related hardware. The $2,000 STC covers installation
of a full suite of Dynon avionics, which allows pilots to
remove the vast majority of their legacy instrumentation -
including the weak link in analog IFR systems: the failureprone vacuum pump.
Dynon's SkyView HDX system provides complete
primary flight instrumentation, including synthetic
vision, AOA, complete engine monitoring (CHTs, EGTs,
fuel flow, fuel computer, and lean assist) and Dynon's
fully integrated two-axis digital autopilot. Integrate the
SkyView HDX with a compatible navigator and the
system can handle full IFR approach capability, including
the various GPS/RNAV approaches available from the
latest generation of WAAS GPS navigators.
The approved installation also includes a Mode S
transponder with 2020-compliant ADS-B Out, navigation
and mapping with flight planning ADS-B traffic and
weather display, and electronic flight bag features. Backup
primary flight instruments are provided by a Dynon EFISD10A. And Dynon charges the same for the STC-eligible
units destined for EAB and LSA as it does for units headed
to the panels of Part 23 aircraft.
Garmin
Garmin also picked up on this new approach with a
series of new products, among them the G5 electronic
flight instrument. According to Garmin, the electronics
in the G5 meet the DO-334 performance requirements
needed for TSO on its certified AHRS systems. That
compliance helped Garmin show that the instrument was
suitable for use via an installation STC - even though the
instrument isn't TSO'd - and thus eligible for installation
in certificated aircraft via the FAA's alternative
compliance path.
With two G5s and the optional standby backup battery

for them, an aircraft owner can ditch the vacuum pump
and go to a full-digital panel - without the expense of a
standby electrical source.
In the autopilot realm, Garmin's GFC 500 and GFC
600 flight-control systems brought advanced autopilot
technology to a wealth of Part 23 aircraft in both pistonand turbine-powered aircraft. And Garmin has continued
to improve and refine both models in the three years
since their initial introduction.
BendixKing
In BendixKing's AeroVue Touch cockpit introduced
two years ago, pilots have the option for a single-box
PFD retrofit option for certified general aviation aircraft.
The main unit of the AeroVue Touch provides a 10.1inch touchscreen, a "near-4K" high-resolution display
offering the choice of a full-screen PFD or a split-screen
shared with a moving map and other flight information,
with large display buttons and infrared scanning to make
for easy use even when wearing gloves or in rough air.
BendixKing designed the AeroVue Touch with shallow
menus to deliver access to all system functions with a
maximum of four touches. Additional features of the
cockpit include Honeywell's SmartView synthetic-vision
system, 2D and 3D moving maps and taxi diagrams, and
VFR sectional charts and IFR high- and low-altitude charts.
Pilots can update databases via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
or through a dedicated USB-C port. The package is
available for installation on more than 350 different
aircraft types through an AML STC.
The options continue to expand
Unfortunately, our springtime opportunities to see and
visit with avionics makers to learn about their new gear fell
victim to the coronavirus pandemic. First postponed and
then canceled for 2020 were both the AEA International
Convention & Trade Show and the first big consumer event
of the air show season, Sun 'n Fun, in Lakeland, Florida.
Ditto for AERO Friedrichshafen in Germany.
In England, authorities canceled the biennial
Farnborough show scheduled against AirVenture
Oshkosh - again, because of concerns about the
communicability of this novel virus.
And finally, on May 1, the Experimental Aircraft
Association canceled AirVenture Oshkosh, scheduled for
July 2020, due to the international health crisis. But rest
assured, avionics makers continue to advance the state
of their art and have in their pockets announcements
yet made. Expect more along these lines in the coming
months. q
