He confessed, trying to design and make a wiring
system with multiple avionics pieces powered by an
alternator with a standby alternator for redundancy
sometimes made him question his choices. Maybe, he
mused, going with a simple analog panel would have been
easier.
His solution to this dilemma: consulting with an
avionics shop to help him through the process.
The builder had already successfully designed the
layout using one of the many panel-planning software
tools available. He placed a primary flight display in
front of the left seat, one that plays engine and power
indications playing along the bottom edge or right side of
the PFD.
Flanking the PFD to the left: a smaller standby PFD.
Flanking the main PFD to the right: a multifunction
display integrated into an IFR all-in-one WAAS GPS/nav/
comm unit. Directly below the IFR all-in-one, a second
radio: a VFR GPS/comm. Finally, across the bottom of
the panel, a subpanel to hold the electrical system's circuit
breakers, the avionics, lights, and the standby alternator,
which he wanted wired to an essential buss.
This complexity brought him to the doorstep of the
avionics maintainers to aid the builder in getting his
dream panel. Interestingly, the response from the first two
shops he contacted provided no progress.
Liability, one shop said in declining to even bid on the
work needed. They didn't like working on experimental
aircraft, it seems, out of concerns for their liability if
something happened to the aircraft and its builder/owner.
The second shop begged off, citing a lengthy backlog of
work awaiting their attention. Finally, a fellow builder of
that design pointed him toward a shop some miles away.
The builder called and the helpful voice on the line
quickly invited the builder to transmit a list of the
avionics and components going into the airplane, specifics
on the main and standby alternators, and a sketch of the
panel's layout. A couple of days later, the shop responded
with an estimate, a time frame, and a couple of options
for wiring the main and standby alternators with a list of
avionics the shop suggested wiring to the standby buss.
Then the shop asked: Have you yet cut the panel for
those components? No, the builder responded.
Well, bring everything and we'll cut the panel, finish
it in your choice of finishes, have the panel stenciled for
the individual items, mount the components, wire the

avionics, breakers and alternators, and return them to you
ready to drop into the aircraft.
While the price was fair, the builder thought, it was
money he'd not budgeted for the project. Here he found
himself conflicted between the pride and joy of boasting
he'd done all the work and the appeal of an expert
avionics shop taking this critical, safety-sensitive work
off the builder's hands.
That was enough to change his budget and shifted his
rhetoric to "I did 90% of the work myself."
Components were loaded into a friend's factory-built
airplane, and after a 40-minute flight to the shop's home
field, he signed a work order, left a deposit check and
flew home. Two weeks later, the shop called him to return
and pick up his dream panel.
A month later, the bird took flight for the first time,
starting its Phase 1 test period after hours in front of the
panel, plane hooked to ground power, so the builder could
immerse himself in learning to use his new panel.
This is not all that rare a story. Builders seem to find
tackling the electrical system and avionics connections
among the more-challenging aspects of their project.
Tube-and-fabric builders face the challenge of learning
to cover and rib-stitch. For composite builders, working
with the materials and chemicals requires study and
practice. For metal-airplane builders, the bend-radius
specifics and bucking rivets take time and skills to master.
But every airplane has a panel. Every builder is
different, likewise for their panel choices. And those
electronically challenged builders are a potential customer
for avionics shops.
But what to offer? How to connect? What services to
provide?
Those are among the questions we address here.
In pursuit of the perfect panel
Let's start at the ultimate focal point of the avionics and
electronics work that goes into an EAB aircraft: the panel
itself. At its face, the panel seems simple enough: a sheet
of aluminum appropriately sized with mounting points
around its perimeter. But the thin piece of sheet metal
probably can't support the weight of some avionics and
instruments.
The solution: mounting trays and braces, hidden out of
