If things slow down in the weeks and months ahead, Dominguez
has a plan. It will be a great time for training since shops have to be
involved in that all the time. Every Part 145 repair station needs to have
an approved training program for the year, and this will be a good time
to take care of a lot of what's in there.
There are plenty of shop maintenance tasks to be performed, parts
and supplies to be ordered to make sure inventory is ready to support
future work, and an online presence that can be improved.
One of his technicians has been working for him for 20 years. He also
hires aerospace engineering students from California Polytechnic State
University, which is located just 6 miles from the airport. "We teach
them basic electronics, avionics and how to solder," he said, and after
working for him for several years they move on to places like Lockheed
Martin, Garmin or Gulfstream. "I'm happy to serve as a steppingstone,"
he said. Dominguez meets a lot of great people this way and stays in
touch with them after they move on.
Dominguez said the industry is changing by leaps and bounds, newly
designed avionics are entering the market all the time, and everything
is software driven. He can check sites like Garmin, Avidyne and Aspen
for service bulletins, software updates and airworthiness directives and
realize he knows a fair number of customers who are affected by the
changes. The customers are happy when he takes care of these issues, and
it brings in revenue for his shop from the avionics manufacturers.
Dominguez has been involved with aviation as long as he can remember,
and he has specialized on avionics since he joined the Army at age 18 and
started working on helicopter avionics. He often wakes up in the middle of
the night and gets an idea of how to tackle a difficult installation problem.
He is always excited to go to work at the airport in the morning.
All the flight schools are closed, and few people are showing up at
the airport to fly their aircraft around the pattern for a few laps. The
future is uncertain, but Dominguez is an optimist. "I think we will be
OK, but this is going to be a hell of a bump in the road," he said.
Some shops saw an immediate impact on business when the
coronavirus hit. At Temple Electronics in Houston, owner James Temple
said the company's 14,000-square-foot hangar was full with 14 aircraft,
including Citations and King Airs. When the coronavirus hit and there
was not much to do, Temple persuaded some of his 20 employees to
work overtime and pull 10-hour shifts. Several customers then called to
postpone scheduled service or installation projects, and soon the hangar
was down to 10 aircraft, the fewest planes there in the past year.
Temple doesn't know what to expect in terms of business for the rest
of the year and may have to downsize in the months ahead after coming
off a banner year with ADS-B mandate work. He said there have been
few coronavirus cases in his area of Texas, and he hopes that nobody
brings a case of coronavirus into his shop. His facility follows the U.S.
government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's COVID-19
guidelines. When business starts to recover, he thinks Part 135 operators
of business jets are going to be extremely busy. q
