autopilot. Pairing the two, as they were partners in flight,
just made sense. And simplified their joint operation.
It's been nearly 40 years, with the FMS shrinking in size
to fit smaller cockpits while its capabilities and functions
progressively expanded to fulfill new capabilities.
If the FMS was a first step on the path of avionics
integration, it opened up an unending road.
Avionics integration spread throughout the flight deck -
and throughout aviation - to include VHF navigation and
communication radios, satellite navigation, flight plan entry
and storage and more - with color display screens replacing
analog dials and flight instruments on the primary flight
display and multifunction display.
Welcome to the world of fully integrated aircraft
avionics packages.
Starting with the FMS
Universal Avionics introduced its UNS-1 FMS back
in 1982, and the company has continually updated the
product since, a product that arguably started the avionicsintegration ball rolling.
Universal's latest version integrates a 12-channel
WAAS-compatible GPS receiver/navigator, with per-pilot
and per-company stored routes, full vertical navigation
capability, fuel management functions and automatic entry
to holding patterns.

Universal offers optional features such as frequency
management and data-link support. A variety of models
are available in both all-in-one and remote-computer
configurations, including a low-profile version with a
4-inch, flat-panel LCD screen. All UNS-1 control units
include a graphic display and an alphanumeric keyboard.
More than a decade after Universal's ground-breaker
arrived came the first integrated modular avionics
and microelectromechanical systems with the simple
monochromatic electronic displays of the mid-1980s with
the initial eight-color displays getting massive increases
in color capabilities and improvements in resolutions to
support adding new information.
In the 1990s, the first primary flight displays began to
appear, combining on one display all six of the standard
six-pack of primary flight instruments: attitude, gyro
compass, turn indicator, vertical speed, airspeed and altitude.
Navigation indicators quickly joined the PFD array.
Simple multifunction displays had appeared on such
aircraft as the single-type-rating Boeing 757 single-aisle
airliner and Boeing's 767 twin-aisle twin-engine airliners.
The two new twin models shared identical flight decks,
a key to the Federal Aviation Administration creating a
common type rating for the duo.
