Earn a rating in the 767 automatically rated for the 757 as well - and
vice versa.
The entry of these new integrated avionics packages quickly
followed in the general aviation fleet, first appearing on mid-size and
large-cabin business jets.
The advance with these new systems from Collins - then Rockwell
Collins - and Honeywell centered on the central control of all the
avionics through the keystrokes and knobs of the integrated stacks.
Radio tuning; flight-plan entry (via the FMS); area navigation; VHF
navigation and the then-new VHF RNAV systems and technology from
ring-laser gyros got ahead of operational practices.
The navigators could guide the aircraft direct, from departure
airport to arrival airport and avoid the zig-zag routing from following
ground-based navigation systems. But air-traffic control's en route and
terminal-arrival procedures weren't drawn to use direct routing, so the
benefits went largely untapped by airlines and business-turbine aircraft
headed into busy Class B airports.
And with glass cockpit displays beginning to find homes in light
turbine aircraft, it was just a matter of time until similarly integrated
avionics systems arrived for the piston-aircraft set.
It was in 2003 that Cirrus and Avidyne led the glass-cockpit
conversion revolution by adding an Avidyne Entegra PFD - the big
10-inch - to the MFD already standard in the SR20 and SR22 piston
singles. That glass cockpit system, the Avidyne Entegra had its greatest
success at Cirrus until the Cirrus Perspective, a G1000 derivative,
debuted in the SR22 in May 2008.
After its launch announcement in 2003, the Garmin G1000 was first
approved and shipped in a Diamond DA40 in June 2004. At about the
same time, nearly completed Cessna 182s were filling the ramp as the
factory in Independence, Kansas, awaited their G1000 deliveries. The
first Cessna 182/G1000s were delivered in July 2004, and 172s began
shipping with the G1000 in early 2005.
Garmin quickly added more airframes, including Cessna's new
Citation Mustang.
Two years ago, a Citation Mustang served as the certification
platform for the updated G1000 NXi, a follow-on that employs faster
processors, more memory, sharper PFD displays and sundry other
improvements, available for either retrofit to upgrade a G1000 package
or as a new install in factory aircraft.
And Garmin advanced the state-of-the-art in integrated avionics
packages with the G3000 and G5000 found in several in-production
jets and as retrofits to a number of older business-turbine aircraft.
For example, Garmin offers an upgrade package for the Beechjet
400A that swaps in the G5000 system, saving hundreds of pounds in
operating weight and adding capabilities unavailable with the factory
panel.
