said. "And we're in a position to restart R9 production at
our factory here should the market warrant it."
The IFD440, IFD540 and IFD550 lead Avidyne's line of
integrated com/nav/boxes.
Out of the IFD line, Avidyne dove into the businessturbine market with its Avidyne Atlas FMS - essentially the
IFD550 rotated 90 degrees with an alphanumeric keyboard.
The companion Helios FMS is Avidyne's entry into the
helicopter FMS field.
Harper noted that the Avidyne Atlas FMS provides full
required navigation performance and RNAV capability,
including LPV, lateral navigation/vertical navigation,
LNAV-only, and approach procedures with vertical
approach modes.
Operators of many older business jets with few
affordable options for advancing their panels' capabilities
have been quick to opt for the Atlas.
The appeal is deep and varied. For example, Avidyne
GPS Legacy Avionics Support provides a direct interface
to legacy Collins Pro Line 21 and Honeywell Primus EFIS
systems for vertical guidance during approach operations.

Garminunique integration capability enables EFISs certified
before the availability of LPV approaches to have coupled
approach guidance on these and other SBAS approaches.
The appeal in those older jets goes deeper thanks to the
option of adding radar display to the Atlas' functions with
the optional interface for BendixKing RDR 2000-series
digital radar systems. The support also includes Vertical
Profile and can replace legacy radar indicators or act as
a repeater display with certain EFIS systems for added
redundancy.
The Atlas also offers the option to display RS-170 video
using any compatible camera or video source.
In the business-turbine segment, integrated
avionics rule the ramp
The business-turbine world helped advance the
popularity of integrated avionics packages going back two
decades, and the attraction continues to grow stronger with
each new evolution of these sophisticated stacks.
Honeywell's Primus Epic, including Epic 2.0 and Epic 2.0+,
boasts the capabilities to fly in any airspace, in any weather
and any approach utilizing Honeywell's situational awareness
products such as INAV, SmartView Synthetic Vision Systems,
2D/3D airport moving maps and DynaCharts.

The company helped launch the shift to integrated
panels with the Primus 1000 and Primus 2000. Today, the
company also offers the Primus Apex and Primus Elite 875
and 885 for smaller turbine aircraft.
Collins - formerly Rockwell-Collins - offers its Pro
Line 21 IDS package and the Pro Line Fusion system.
Retrofit options for the Pro Line series include the Pro
Line 21 for Challenger 300 and 605, for the Beechcraft
King Air line, a Pro Line 4 update for the Falcon 50,
Falcon 50EX, and Falcon 2000 and 2000 EX, as well
as the Fusion upgrade available for the Cessna Citation
CJ2+, Pro Line 21 upgrade for the Beechjet 400A and
Hawker 750, 800XP and 850XP.
The latent benefits of avionics integration:
Weight watchers would be envious
Moving away from analog instruments into digital
brought improvements in utility and energy use. Arguably
the benefit most surprising to pilots derives from the
weight saved when an operator moves to a digital, glasscockpit-based integrated avionics package from the analog
instruments and indicators - and again with upgrades to
newer integrated packages.
For example, installing a Garmin G5000 panel in a
Beechjet 400 saves more than 200 pounds off the operating
empty weight of the twin jet. That's 200 pounds available
for carrying more fuel, more people, or a combination of
the two.
More benefits arise out of the modular nature of the
components installed with an integrated package. Linereplaceable units - boxes housing the core electronics - can
help reduce the space needed for the avionics electronics
- as well as simplifying the replacement of failed
components.
And the reduction in switches and circuit breakers adds
further to the benefits accruing to the maintenance and
upkeep chores.
The changeover can help make space and weight
capacity to install an in-flight internet package, along with
the power needed to drive it. In-flight entertainment options
increase with the airborne internet option, as do avenues
for the folks in the back cabin to use their phones and email
accounts.
And for those folks sitting up front in the aircraft's main
office, the central location of instruments and navigation
info on the PFD and MFD help make their work easier to
accomplish.
It's a revolution that will only continue to expand with
more, better and lighter integrated avionics stacks. q
