Focused on customers
Today, Sanders oversees avionics program management
and business development for StandardAero, an independent
aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul provider based
in Scottsdale, Arizona. StandardAero's Business Aviation
division offers avionics service and installations at its three
U.S. facilities in Houston, Texas; Springfield, Illinois; and
Augusta, Georgia.
"We can install systems as simple as cabin LED lighting
and USB charging ports all the way to major flight deck LCD
retrofits, ground-based connectivity, and Ku/Ka-based satellite
connectivity systems," he said. "If there is a system that
needs certification, then our ODA group works not only with
StandardAero on certification but with outside customers who
need outside ODA engineering services as well."
As director, Sanders works closely with the company's
marketing team to educate customers on StandardAero's
avionics capabilities, helps develop partnership campaigns
with avionics OEMs, and collaborates with vendors and their
marketing and sales teams.
"I also work closely with the regional sales managers and
regional directors to focus on what customers are requesting,
keeping them informed about new products, and helping
them with any information they might need to better inform
customers of our products, capabilities and offerings," he
explained.
Experience in the hangar
Prior to his management roles, Sanders spent nearly
20 years working in the hangar as an avionics technician,
avionics crew chief and A&P mechanic for FAA-certified
repair stations. He has amassed hundreds of hours of
technical training on a broad range of business aviation
aircraft and avionics systems. The experience has helped
Sanders relate to customers as well as StandardAero's
avionics technicians.
"Sometimes when I go on customer visits, I see aircraft
that I worked on as an avionics technician or completed an
installation on as a crew chief," Sanders explained. "I'm able
to talk to customers about mods that were accomplished, or
how an avionics product gets installed in greater detail than
they would normally expect from a product director.
"Internally, with the operations group, I try to carry
myself as an A&P mechanic and avionics technician first.
It's almost the same motto as the U.S. Marine Corps, no
matter what your MOS (military occupation code) is, you
are a rifleman first. I make sure to remember the long nights
and weekends that the technicians put in to make sales and
the customer events successful. Since my home base is our

Houston, Texas, facility, I take time to talk to the technicians
on the floor and let them know what the avionics group is
working on."
Biggest industry changes
For Sanders, the biggest industry changes since those
early days as an avionics technician have come in the
flight deck and in the cabin. When he started in aviation,
the cockpit was a "bunch of round dial analog instruments
and later on smaller CRT tube displays." RVSM, TCAS
and EGPWS modifications were in demand, but still his
job mostly involved installing a box, running wiring and
interfacing with existing systems.
"Nowadays, the cockpit is fully integrated, and the
companies that have cockpit offerings have dwindled,"
Sanders said. "Instead of installing separate boxes, now we
install cards or software. In the cabin, connectivity has been
in demand the most.
"I remember my first internet installation. It was a 56K
wired satellite internet installation, and I thought that it was
the most-advanced thing I have ever seen - to have internet
in an aircraft. Now, we take that for granted and expect
there always to be internet and for it to work everywhere we
travel."
Technological advancements in flight deck and cabin
systems have forced avionics technicians, sales teams
and product developers to adapt, according to Sanders.
To work with avionics, they must be able to understand
not only certification and installation, but also have an
in-depth knowledge of computer software, integration and
telecommunications.
