" ADS-B kept us good and busy right up to the deadline, and
then the stragglers who thought it wasn't going to happen came
along about the time the virus hit. Our install business has
increased with the pandemic. People are not flying on business
trips or to see grandma, so they are using the time to buy
products and have them installed. Right now, autopilots are
a third to half of our business, with and without displays and
other upgrades. Overall, we've been lucky; we have gotten no
calls from contact tracers, and no employee has gotten sick. "

" Flights with customers don't happen anymore, and
customer interaction is almost nonexistent. The customer
leaves the airplane on the ramp, drops off the keys, and walks
away. Return to service is difficult, and training is a nightmare.
We follow the requirements the best we can. It's pick and
choose because there are no true guidelines for our industry, so
we have to look at what they have set for other businesses and
make our own procedures. " All of the above is how the father
and son replied to the guideline sources, state, county or local.
The 15-person shop works on everything from the smallest
homebuilt to the Stratolaunch, the world's biggest airplane,
and everything in between. " We're considered essential, but
because we had more than 10 employees, we had to stagger
shifts. They have lifted that requirement of no gathering
of more than 10 people, but we've had to segregate shops,
structures cannot interact with avionics so only one person at a
time is working on an airplane, " they said.
" Customers are hanging tight, and some deferred work
to later dates. We're not making any profits. That goes into
cleaning and disinfecting airplanes before you can work on it
and before you return it to the customer. They fly around the
world, so you don't know where they have been. But we're
keeping the doors open. We gotta do what we gotta do to stay
alive. " q
