up with a two-pronged approach, which was: No. 1, get
really good at panel-mounted solutions for larger Part 23
aircraft like King Airs and Citation CJ-series jets, " Schwinn
explained. " Then move that experience into smaller Part 25
aircraft, first with panel-mount products. Next is to build a
pedestal-mounted solution for older, Part 25 business jets.

Avidyne completed Part 25 certification for the IFD540
multifunction FMS navigator in Citation Excel and XLS models.

Take what we know best and move it up through the various
markets.
" That effort has been going on for the past 18 months,
and now it's really starting to gain good momentum in the
market. While the new Avidyne Atlas FMS has been slowed
a bit by COVID, it's nearly ready for the market. The
market reception for Atlas has been fantastic. Nobody else is
really trying to do what we are doing in that segment of the
Part 25 market right now.
" Which is to say, build a new-generation, relatively
low-cost, entry-point, pedestal-mount FMS, with many
multifunction display features, aimed at the legacy part
of the business jet fleet. Universal Avionics has kind of
gone all upstream. Garmin is pushing its panel-mounted
products or complete avionics systems replacement. Collins
Aerospace and Honeywell are only doing upgrades for their
flight decks - and they're very expensive - and they're
relatively less functional than what we offer. "
He said that looking at the market segment as a
whole, it's currently being ignored by the other avionics
manufacturers.

" We have it pretty much to ourselves right now, "
Schwinn added. " The reception we are getting from owner/
operators is they are very glad we are paying attention to
their needs. "
As Schwinn mentioned, while COVID has somewhat
slowed the introduction of the pedestal-mounted Atlas FMS,
Avidyne's team is on track with the overall program. It's the

" We recently completed our first in-house, Part 25
transport category STC certification for the panel-mounted
IFD540 multifunction FMS navigator in the Citation Excel
and XLS models equipped with Honeywell Primus 1000
EFIS, " Schwinn said. " This will be the basis for additional
STC amendments and field approvals by Avidyne and our
MRO partners for the entire range of Avidyne multifunction
FMS to migrate into a wide variety of turbine aircraft.
" IFD-series installations have already been field approved
with partner MROs on the Citation II, Citation V, Citation
Bravo, Lear 31 and Lear 35, Westwind, and the Piaggio
Avanti II, EVO, and Classic, with many more to follow.
Each Part 25 approval moves us another leap forward as we
expand into this market of otherwise highly-capable legacy
turbine aircraft that are in dire need of affordable avionics
modernization solutions. "
Avidyne's big move in midsize helicopters
By now, you've gotten the idea that Schwinn and his
team at Avidyne are extremely good at capitalizing on
an opportunity. Just as they have spotted an underserved
market in Part 25 business jets, they've set their sights
on a similar opportunity serving legacy midsize turbine
helicopters. And it's paying off.
" We earned an STC for our IFD units on Robinson
helicopters back in the middle of 2018; they've sold them as
a factory option, and we've done a few retrofits, " Schwinn
explained. " But what we found - and I don't know if the
STC had anything to do with it - is that we're now seeing
a lot of interest in the IFDs from operators flying larger
helicopters.
" They have decided they really prefer our products.
Maybe it's our hybrid touch technology - you can use both
buttons and knobs - over other options. We know they love
the synthetic vision capabilities in the IFD550 for sure. "
Schwinn said, right now, they have a number of large
fleet operators installing the IFD-units in midsize rotorcraft
like Bell 212s, 412s, and 421EPs. Avidyne is also working
on an STC for the AugustaWestland A109C.
In addition to the features, robustness and functionality of
the IFD units, Schwinn felt Avidyne's willingness to get out
there and work with customers to solve difficult installation
and integration issues was another key factor in operators
choosing their products.
