who serves as the repair station's accountable manager. " Marco Carpio was my
assistant director of maintenance at a previous employer. I was lucky enough to
be able to convince him to come work at Qmulus Aviation as our chief inspector.
We also have three other gentlemen who are really world-class technicians. "
To build early momentum and bring customers in the door, Owens is targeting
the older single-engine piston market.
" We have a lot of aging aircraft here, and we want to help them with upgrades, "
he said. " We started a maintenance program for Cessna single-engine high-wing
piston aircraft. We'll be announcing additional aircraft maintenance programs
throughout 2021. "
Owens wants to give Qmulus Aviation the opportunity to install advanced
avionics systems and technology in the cockpits of older aircraft - systems that
may not otherwise be available to them because of the cost.
" I'd like to go to a vendor and say I have 30 aircraft that need upgraded right
now, what kind of discounts can I get to pass onto my customers, " he said. " If
we can make that work, it would allow us to make a profit while providing an
excellent, safe avionics solution for those aging aircraft. "
While Owens is focused on single-engine pistons at the moment, he expects that
the repair station will step up to piston-twins and turboprops in the future.
" My background is turbines, so we can handle King Airs and other turboprops, "
Owens said. " I would love to start maintaining Pilatus, especially legacy 45/47
aircraft, but I would have to work through logistics issues for parts and specialty
tools. We have a very good capabilities list, and it allows us to install avionics on
any aircraft. That gives us a lot of flexibility. But, right here, right now, singleengine pistons is our market; we'll start with it to build our infrastructure. "
While most of Qmulus Aviation's customers operate under Part 23, Owens
included a drug-testing program to ensure that the repair station can also serve Part
135 operators as the need arises.
" We're eager to provide great aircraft maintenance to any owner-operator, "
Owens said. " As for the pandemic, we've felt a little bit of the impact. It slowed
us down with the FAA somewhat. Plus, while waiting for our 145, we had some
potential agreements in place that we planned to complete once we had the
certificate in hand. With COVID-19, things changed for those businesses, so we're
kind of in a holding pattern with them. Still, this has been a really exciting time
for us. The chance to start with a blank canvas and turn it into reality just drew me
in. I thought, how can I turn this into something? How can I turn this need into a
successful business model? I love a challenge. " q
