or internal short. And True Blue Power engineered its two
batteries with several layers of protection, among them integral
electronics that make the batteries " smart. "
Chemistry is the first stage of the multiple levels of
safety elements addressed by the True Blue Power batteries.
Other aspects beyond the chemistry include: the physical
cell design; the pack and battery system packaging; and the
integration of sophisticated electronic systems to protect the
batteries.
At a product briefing True Blue Power hosted at its
Wichita, Kansas, headquarters Winter played video clips of
two individual lithium-ion cells enduring what was called a
" nail-penetration test. " With the cell clamped in a fixture, a
hydraulic ram drove a two-penny nail through the side of a
cell as a camera rolled and instruments tracked the resulting
reaction to the physical violation.
The cell employing more-conventional lithium-ion
chemistry quickly began to smoke as its temperature
increased exponentially, reaching more than 1,500 degrees
Fahrenheit in less than 60 seconds. At the same time, the
metals in the cell ignited into flames.
For reference, the melting point of aluminum is a relatively
low 1,218 degrees Fahrenheit - low enough for that individual
overheated lithium-ion cell to damage an aircraft with an
aluminum airframe. For low-carbon steel, the melting point is
2,570 degrees Fahrenheit, and higher for high-carbon steels.
The same nail-penetration test performed on one of the
individual cells used in a True Blue Power battery exhibited
a fraction of the smoke, no flame, and the temperature climb
ended at about 220 degrees Fahrenheit - barely hot enough
to boil water but too low to ignite other substances or heatdamage aluminum.
While not required for the TSO or STC approvals, an
unidentified customer tested a True Blue Power battery - one
approved for use in a helicopter model in military use - by
subjecting the battery to one round of Browning 50-caliber
machine-gun ammunition fired from a sniper rifle of the same
caliber.
The round passed through the battery, which continued to
function at a high percentage of its capacity - and without an
associated increase in operating temperature or an associated
decline in power output.
True Blue Power lithium-ion batteries:
Benefits abound
Many other forms of lithium-ion battery technology share
most of the same benefits of the aircraft-approved batteries from
True Blue Power. It's these very advantages that helped drive
the shift to lithium-ion technologies and away from NiCad,
nickel-metal hydride, and other available battery technologies.

Consider these.
Lighter weight - by about 60%; higher cranking power;
greater power density; greatly reduced maintenance. The
costs, however, while higher, are offset by the longer life and
reduced maintenance requirements. The 60% lighter weight also
provides operational benefits.
Vertical Flight Solutions by EuroTec
This company received Transport Canada Civil Aviation
approval for the installation of the TB17 lithium-ion mainship battery on Airbus H125/AS350 Series helicopters. The
battery integration requires no structural work and includes a
night-vision system compatible cockpit annunciator. Additional
approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration and the
European Union Aviation Safety Agency are expected to follow.
