When he was with True North Avionics, Bartlett was heavily involved with developing
networking equipment for business jets, and aircraft connectivity has grown and matured
in the 21st century, he said. " But there was little focus on network security. It was about
meeting customer requirements, who wanted terrestrial internet and Wi-Fi capabilities in
the aviation environment, all the cool stuff that happens now on commercial aircraft. "
When the cybersecurity dialogue began in 2015, a number of cybersecurity companies
were trying to fit their terrestrial solutions into the aircraft environment, but none
focused specifically on delivering airborne cybersecurity solutions. " We think there is a
big gap in the industry that we're confident we can fill, " Bartlett said.
" When we filed the paperwork for the company three years ago, we wanted a bird-ofprey name, but all the good ones were taken, so we selected three random letters. They
are not an acronym, but they stand for aircraft safety, specifically for cybersecurity and
avionics testing. " CCX delivered its first products and services a little more than two
years ago.
" Our baseline is that the Western world understands that there is a substantial
cybersecurity risk with anything electronic, whether you need physical access to it
or whether you can access it remotely, " Bartlett said. Generically, aircraft have two
networks. The cabin network delivers Wi-Fi internet to the passengers. The flight deck
network connects the avionics on proprietary data buses like ARINC 429 and ARINC
717, with a pilot-specific Wi-Fi connection to their tablet-based electronic flight bags.
While they are separate networks, the cybersecurity threats posed by their satcom,
ATG, Wi-Fi or LTE connections are no different. And the segregation of cabin and flight
deck networks is changing, Bartlett noted. " Operators who just spent $500,000 on a
satcom for the cabin want to know why they need to install a second satcom to get the
flight deck data they want on the ground. "
