Senior vice president of technology and products at Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics

A

seasoned pilot, U.S. Marine and industry expert
with two decades in aviation, Matt Harrah has
translated his experience in the cockpit and in the
military into helping aviation companies serve
their customers and grow their businesses. It's a challenging
task considering the industry's diverse markets and how
quickly technology is evolving.
" The improvements in capability and safety in the past 20
years have been so rapid, " said Harrah, senior vice president
of technology and products for Mid-Continent Instruments and
Avionics of Wichita, Kansas. " It has changed not only in the
technology but what it means to pilots in terms of skill. Now,
as a pilot you have to be able to manage systems in ways you
didn't in 1995. This includes more capable navigation systems
and procedures and decision-making based on the myriad of
data that is coming into the cockpit displays. "
Harrah oversees the company's sales and customer
service, engineering, quality assurance, shipping, business
development and aftermarket program management as well
as its True Blue Power division. True Blue Power's products
include USB charging ports, inverters, converters, emergency
power supplies and advanced lithium-ion batteries.
" We're seeing increased demand for an improved
passenger experience, " said Harrah, who previously served
on the Aircraft Electronics Association's board of directors
and understands each market segment's unique perspective.

" Some of that starts with simple - relatively speaking - USB
ports up to the more complex support of power in the cockpit
and through the galley and cabin as a whole.
" Every day, my focus starts and ends with serving our
customers. It can be a real challenge given the breadth of our
markets, from traditional AEA member avionics shops and
MROs, to corporate flight departments, fixed-wing and rotarywing EMS, airlines and military organizations. Each customer
drives different activities, and it requires me to interact with just
about every aspect of our company on a daily basis. "
Biggest influences
Harrah's interest in aviation started young. In the 1970s,
he enjoyed a special outing with his dad - a Blue Angels
airshow at the Naval Air Station in Olathe near Kansas City,
now known as New Century AirCenter. As the Douglas A-4
Skyhawks streaked across the sky in a complex aerial dance,
it cemented an enduring love of aviation in the boy.
" After my dad passed away when I was young, my mother
remarried and my stepdad worked for TWA at the Kansas
City Overhaul Base in performance engineering, " said Harrah,
who holds an airline transport pilot license, airplane multiengine land, and a commercial license, single-engine land
with instrument rating. " It was always a highlight to go see
the mechanics working on the aircraft. He was also a private
pilot and encouraged me to learn to fly. "
