avionics manufacturers, distributors and governmentcertified repair stations in the world. This convention is
the platform of choice for the introduction of new avionics
products and services coming to market in 2021.

competition from the tens of thousands who typically throng
to the city for the odd-numbered-year event at Le Bourget
Airport.
" We have already started work to ensure that the 2023
edition celebrates the resurgence of the aerospace industry
on an international scale, " said the show's chairman, Patrick
Daher, in announcing the decision.
Here's where things stand for some of the other events
planned for 2021. But first, this caveat.
Pandemic-related conditions
may force schedule changes
As an official from one of these events privately noted,
trying to organize these events in the time of a COVID-19
pandemic is " a little like trying to predict where the roulette
ball will land on the spinning wheel. "
As this article is being written, the U.S. was just
beginning to organize mass vaccinations in hopes of
returning life to something closer to " normal " by the fall of
2021. This effort started amid a major surge in infections,
positive tests and growing deaths associated with the
coronavirus, with a majority of states seeing their trend lines
headed in directions opposite what officials hoped to see.
Efforts to control the spread were failing in a majority of
states, and the arrival of vaccines was seen as the next best
hope of bringing the pandemic under control - and sending
it into retreat. At the same time, politicians in some states
and on the national level continued to spread information
discouraging social distancing and mask use.
Anyone planning to attend any of these events as a
vendor, exhibitor or participant would do well to pay close
attention to news of the pandemic in the host states and be
prepared for the prospect of changed schedules or outright

cancellation of the event, as we saw happen to so many
events in 2020. Flexibility would be a major asset.
The state of air travel
The latest report from Airlines for America reflects how
the pandemic continues to afflict commercial carriers.
In a report released in early December, the U.S. airlines
carried 62% fewer passengers in October 2020 than they
did in October 2019, according to the Department of
Transportation, the smallest year-to-year decrease reported
since March. Airlines for America estimated that overall
demand was still down 62% as of late November.
As for shows, conventions and the like, remember that all
dates and plans cited are as of December 2020. Ultimately,
however, the future for these events remains subject to
the state of the pandemic and pandemic-related rules
and constraints imposed by the federal government, the
individual states and even local city and county rules as we
progress through 2021.
A Honeywell forecast
During NBAA's VBACE in early December, Honeywell's
annual kickoff report delivered an optimistic tone. While
business aviation suffered along with every other sector of
civil aviation, the community of business aviation operators
showed more resilience than other aviation-industry sectors,
with metrics already showing signs of improvement,
according to Mike Madsen, Honeywell Aerospace president
and chief executive officer.
