One Baker, One Goal
Paying It Forward for Student Scholarships

n Sept. 19, the Baker community came together for One Baker, One Goal,
24 hours of online giving and paying it forward for the Baker Fund for
Scholarships. The inaugural Day of Giving featured competition among various teams. Each donor joined a team based on an academic area, sorority
or fraternity involvement, or relationship with the university.

At midnight, when the competition ended, nearly 300 donors had raised over
$62,000, which will support student scholarships for years to come. Spencer Brown,
president of Zeta Chi fraternity, gathered his brothers to send in a group donation.
For Brown, raising money for student scholarships was a great way to help give future
generations the same life-changing experiences he's had at Baker.
"Scholarships are ultimately what allowed me to become a Baker student," Brown
said. "I've always been extremely grateful for the opportunities that Baker has provided me, and it is all thanks to the support of donors who believe in the importance of a
Baker University education."
Two alumni who were instrumental in the successful event are Baker University
Board of Trustees member Richard Howell and his wife, Shannon, both '74. The
Howells provided a $15,000 challenge match to start the day. "It helped to kick off the
day in such a meaningful way and helped further the success of the campaign," said
Rachel (Hawkins) Shuck, '12, annual fund officer.
"I was blown away by the support from alumni, current students, faculty, staff, and
the rest of the Baker community for our first Day of Giving," Shuck said. "It was so
wonderful to see so many people come together to support current and future students, and we were overwhelmed by the generosity shown throughout the day."

KC Scholars offers Baker
students three college
scholarship opportunities:
Traditional Scholarship: awarded
in 11th grade

Adult Learners: some college, no
degree

College Savings Match: awarded
in 9th grade

Through this KC Scholars
partnership, Baker University
recently received a grant to
implement a new ACUE Course
in Effective Teaching Practices
certification. ACUE is a national
certificate program in evidencebased teaching practices shown to
increase student achievement and
course completion. Faculty who
complete the program are awarded
a nationally recognized Certificate
in Effective College Instruction that
is co-endorsed by ACUE and the
American Council on Education.
