Dr. John Ernst speaks at the May 12
Commencement ceremonies

aker University hosted three Commencement ceremonies in May, honoring graduates from each of its four schools who earned degrees ranging
from associate to doctoral.
On Saturday morning, May 12, undergraduates from the School of
Professional and Graduate Studies received their diplomas. In the afternoon, graduates who earned master's and doctoral degrees from the School of Professional and
Graduate Studies, School of Nursing, and School of Education were honored. May 20
concluded the celebration, when bachelor's degrees were awarded to graduates of
the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Education.
May 12 Commencement keynote speaker, Dr. John Ernst, MSSL '08, EdD '15,
reflected fondly on his Baker experience and the experiences of the graduates in the
room. He recalled learning alongside faculty members Dr. Jim Karleskint and Dr.
Harold Frye, and the profound effect their mentorship had on his career path.
"I know many of you have a story similar to mine. These are the things that
make Baker great and special," Ernst said.
The May 20 Commencement ceremony was special for Baker University President Lynne Murray.
"Today's a little bit different for me, because this is my first graduating class," Dr.
Murray said. "So I truly know how special you are."
It wasn't just Dr. Murray who struggled to say goodbye to this class. Senior Class
President Spencer Brown also reflected on the difficulty of leaving Baker.
"Something about the Baker magic makes it hard to close this door," he said.
Keynote speaker and New York Times best-selling author Candice Millard, '89,
also reflected on the Baker magic.
"Baker University is an important place," she said. "It's a place where you're
taught to think about your life outside of the classroom, as well as inside of it, to
think about big things, and to think in practical terms about what you will do with
life."
Dr. Murray ended the ceremony with these words, "Baker will always be your
home. Don't forget that."
